To Whom it May Concern,

I am switching from straight to curve bowl and its been kind of tough. I use to average around 17o straight bowl but cannot seem to get the hang of the curve bowl.

Here is a video of my bowl to analyze, I know I need to let my thumb ot first but not sure how to, I cant tell my body to do this.

Hello and welcome to Bowling Chat. Being new to bowling I would recommend you fisrt focus on fundamentals. First, buy a good pair of bowling shoes that have a rubber sole on your right shoe and a slide sole on the left. Is your ball fitted to your hand by a reputable pro shop? This is very important so you don't muscle/squeeze the ball, from the video it looks like you do.

Before you learn how to hook the ball it is my opinion that you must first learn some fundamentals on your approach, trust me it is the fastest way. I will post a link to the Kegel Teen Masters training videos which I believe will teach you the fundamentals you need:

Learn and practice the skills in videos 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

If you cand find a certified coach to work with you it will be money well spent.

As far as learning to curve, start with a very basic release, just keep your hand in a basic 45 degree position. Here's an article that shows you that release but remember that in bowling the release is just the icing on the cake, without a solid approach trying to develop a good release is not of very much use.

Good luck!

I see Tony has already posted while I was writing this epistle.
Like Tony, I highly recommend the Kegel videos.
In addition, here are some things to consider.

Congratulations on maintaining a 170 average using a straight ball.

Never ever forget that straight ball as that is the best way to shoot most spares. By doing so, you remove the lane condition (how oily, how dry and where so) as a variable.

I can see you are wearing house shoes.
First recommendation is buy a decent pair of shoes, a pair that has a slide sole for your slide foot, and a traction sole for your bowling side shoe.

Next, if you are not using a fingertip grip, have a ball drilled fingertip at a good pro-shop.
Get an entry level reactive resin ball.

The quality and consistency of a bowler's release is predicated on the things that the bowler does or does not do on the way to the line, they will help or hinder the release.
Some of the rationale and biomechanics are covered in the ETBF videos which can be found on the wiki.
That long video is segmented on YouTube
I intentionally ordered the list 2,3,1

Some of those being:
The set up
Ball placement into the swing at the optimum time (that will make things easier as timing will be your friend or adversary)
Footwork, direction, size, nature, and cadence
A swing as devoid of muscle as possible that is as straight as possible and online to your
targets on the lane. By targets I mean a close in target for example, the dots, the arrows, and another target further down the lane. Ball crosses both targets and at some point starts to arc to the pocket.
A well balanced finish at the line (which you always should hold as you watch your ball until it falls in to to put

Here are some threads with some good information.

Look for a mention of Greg Helms in the thread, as he mentions a good way to teach releasing a ball. There is a lot of good information in that thread. You will see videos on how to hook the ball

Another good resource

Your goal to strike, is to hit the pocket then have the ball split the 8-9 pins falling in the pit
Between them.

As for your video
Check this method on the wiki

I've laid a lot on you as you have things besides your release to work on, hopefully it will help you along your way.

Cheers.
