Closed Hand Position at top of swing

Post by Peeku »

Hi Jim,

I seem to be having a problem keeping my hand open (or at least straight) at the top of my swing.

Currently only have back view, will upload side view tomorrow (if needed). Not sure if its relevant to say that the ball speed and release in the video above was nerfed in an attempt to get the ball to read up.

I am thinking the issue is with my footwork since I don't have a cross over step on the 2nd to create the slot for the ball to come through. Probably is wrong.

Hope you can help me out with this!

I see you are relatively new to the site, so welcome Jon.

Bowling like golf is not about where the swing (hand) is at the top, but where it is at
impact (release)

Changing your hand position at the top of the swing will not improve your already great release.
I’ve seen many athletes with their hand on the inside at the top that would give you their position to you to have your release.

Analization
1) Looking at slide 3 everything is in good position
2) Going from slide 3 to 4, I see two things happening………your right hand is rotating towards the outside of the ball and your left foot is stepping to the left.
3) It is this move that creates your hand position at the top.
4) In slide 6, you can see that your right arm is bent entering the release area.
5) You do a great job straightening that arm prior to release.
6) It is this move that adds power to your release.
7) In slide 8 the lower body (right leg) is working overtime.

My suggestions:
1) Forget about the hand position at the top of your swing.
2) Work on the quieting down the lower body at release.
3) Send new video when this is accomplished and I will give you more direction.
