Old Dawg needs new tricks

Post by trainee »

Jim,

I am trying desperately to help Dan here to relax his swing and work on his balance. This video was taken just after a drastic grip change so that he could get his entire thumb into the thumb hole while the finger pads still hold the front of the holes.

Any help in his improvement is appreciated!

I think the balance problems are being caused by the bowlers feet. The first step, along with the pushaway is huge. The second step, also very large veers off to the left, while the third step is very short, and very fast. I believe that this bowler would be better off using a five step approach, adding a timing step at the beginning, and shortening the second step and the pushaway, while lengthening the fourth step to make it more pronounced to set up a more powerful slide.

1) Set-up looks good

2) Shorten first step as illustrated in S2 & S3

3) Shortening the first step will keep the ball above waist level.

4) From this position allow the right arm to unfold on the next step.

5) Just unfold the arm and allow gravity to create the down swing.

6) Currently his upper body follows the downward movement of the ball. This a big no no.

7) He needs to maintain the spine tilt reflected by the yellow line. Again do not bend forward as the ball swings downward in S4.

8) The over tilted upper body position in S5 restricts the back swing.

9) In S5 he is so far from the foul line that he must take a very long step to reach the foul line.

10) And he does take a step versus getting the toe down first in order to slide properly.

11) His posture in the finish is good just as he was in the start.

12) However, he stands straight up during release in S8.

Game plan
Work on shortening the first step.
Then allow the right arm to unfold downward while keeping the right elbow close to his body.
Maintain the spine tilt as the ball swings downward.

I’ve attached Doug Kent as a role model for his changes
1) In DK2 the right elbow is close to the body and the ball is positioned above waist level.
2) In DK3 the right elbow remains close to the body as the right arm unfolds
3) Notice how the upper body spine tilt (yellow line) remains stable as the ball swings downward.

Focus on shortening the first step and incorporating these three items and we’ll go from there.
