Best way to improve footwork

Post by GBuck »

Hi,

Still have issues with steps 2 and 4 (of 5), especially step 4 going in front of steps 1 and 3, in order to create the tightrope. Any drills for this?

Drills? how about a suggestion.

Glenn,
Last time I reviewed your video step two looked okay. As for step four not many get it in front of the previous step due to misalignment of the body at address to their intended target line.

1) Typically, we pick a target at the arrows (or dots) and extend that line to our break point.
2) Goal being to roll the ball down that line to the break point.

3) Let's now extend that line (swing path line) from the foul line to the back of the approach (green line in my example).

4) Now at address our right shoulder (pivot point of swing) should be over this green line.
5) As we move up the approach and the swing moves forward, back and through.........the swing should cover this line.
6) If this happens I think you will find it easy to get you fourth step back in front of the preceding step.

7) As most people move up the approach they move away from the green line.
8) They in turn have to walk back towards the green line in order to deliver the ball where their eyes are looking.
9) Thus the fourth step goes to the right...not back in front of the preceding step.

If you look at your video, you will see you are guilty of this move.
Here's how to work on correcting this issue.

Go to an office supply store, etc and buy a roll of 2" wide paper mache.

Go to the center, decide on a target and break point.

Extend that line back to the foul line...tape the beginning of the paper mashe at the foul line and extend it back past your starting point on the approach.

Not setup at address (no ball) with your right shoulder and forearm positioned over that line.

Walk to the line keeping the swing positioned over that line as it moves forward back and down.

Also work on the position of steps 2 & 4 while doing this drill.

After a few reps, try it with the ball.

You may find that you will be further right than your normal starting position...but you will no longer be making that compensation move in step 4.

You should become more accurate and transferring energy from the approach more efficiently into your release.

Have some patience as it may not seem possible at first.
