What to do?
Situation: Im team captain of a mens league team.
We're in 6th place out of 24 teams, we're bowling the 4th place team.
We lose the first 2 games pretty close, like 12 and 18 pins.
Lose the 3rd game by 10
My knee is absolutely throbbing the whole night, I have an issue with my knee, I've gotten it checked out by a doctor, he didnt find anything, I suspect arthritis.
Anyway, I've got a debilitating medical issue when I bowl more than once per week.
I bowled Wednesday.
Im bowling my ass off, 259,220,182,223, while my knee is throbbing, searing pain all night.
My teammate absolutely mails it in 4th game, he ended up shooting 679 for 4, and hes a 197 avg bowler.
After game 2 he was struggling with the start of transition, he had a fill ball, and I wanted to make a recommendation, he said no, completely blew me off, fill ball again through the nose, 1-3-6. Makes a move to start the 3rd game, works for that first few frames, but doesnt follow the transition.
Come 4th game, hes making poor shots, trying to stuff the ball from the dirt, missing easy spares, leaving splits, and has the attitude that he cant wait to get out there.
Meanwhile, myself and my other teammate are bowling to keep us in it.
I made the adjustments needed to keep us in it.
He loses a little skin on his thumb at the end, hes got 110 on an open going into the 10th
He says the words, "One more frame and I can get outta here".
At this point, im on a double, and we're about -12.
Lead off man who is actually trying eight-outs, then the poor sport doubles in the 10th, I get the first strike in the 10th, but we lost by like 7.
I want to blame myself for the loss, im the anchor, and should be expected to double to win, but at what point can I say that I cant do it alone, and I cant pull a double out all the time?
We lost all 5 games tonight, we're now in 10th.
Maybe im venting here, but wouldnt you think its a cardinal sin to just mail it in like that the entire last game?
You're quitting on your teammates and yourself.
Sorry for the long read, im getting bitter.
I may give up THS league bowling all together and just get killed on sport in the fall for 25 weeks.
The poor bowlers with poor attitudes are really getting to me.

Re: What to do?
A couple of questions if I may.
You said that your "postman" is a 197 average bowler, is it normal for him to lose composure when he's not bowling in his comfort zone?
You mentioned that you were willing to give him a heads up on making a move at the end of the 2nd game and that he wasn't willing to hear it - is this normal for him (the not wanting to hear/take advice)?
You also mentioned that he was slow to search for new oil/follow transition - to the point of the last game trying to force things to work. Again, is this normal s.o.p. for him?
You were bowling thru pain - and I imagine that you wanted to make every shot count so that you didn't have to throw a spare ball. Also from the tone of your writing you want the team to do their best, period (aka: if we win, yea -- if not, boo - but we gave 'em hell either way.), and the way this bowler acted on this night was quite an affront to you. Which is why I asked the 3 questions the way I did - was this normal for him in any way, shape, or form? If not, give him a couple of days to hopefully put the night behind him (you too), then ask him what the scoop was. If it was legit - so be it. If not, kindly remind him that your knee wouldn't appreciate you kicking him in the ass, so stop giving you motivation to do so. Hopefully he'll take it well and life can go on with salvaging position next week.
However if this is normal s.o.p. for him, I might be auditioning for a replacement for the next season.
just my .02.

Re: What to do?
Thanks for your reply.
Ive slept on it overnight, I'm not seething like I was last night, but still pretty mad at my teammate for giving up on us like that.
The 197 average bowler thinks hes more clutch than he really is.
Actually had the chi-chi's to put "Captain" on the "are you returning next year?" sheet.
I cant count the number of times hes gone nine-out in the 10th to put it all on me to win.
He pinwheels the ball, so he plays in the dirt.
When he needs to move in, and loses it to the outside its skatesville.
Then he gives up on the move even though its the correct one, and starts stuffing it.
I think its a confidence problem.
I tried not to let the pain affect my shot making.
It didn't help that the approaches were slick to start.
There wasn't any residue, but thats besides the point.
Its hard to ignore it every single shot, that stabbing, burning sensation in the middle of my knee.
Its the end of the season, every shot of every game counts.
We were in 6th, and about 4 games out of 4th place with 3 weeks left.
I've harped on them about, nine-out, nine-out, double to win.
Both these guys are year-two, year-three league bowlers.
When I speak, they listen... sometimes... but rarely stick with the information.
Both have major flaws in their game, and don't make the effort to make any sort of correction.
Its nice to bowl with 2 guys in my age group, but it seems to be the same song.
Poor bowling, bad attitudes and zero will to get better to help the team.
I'm in a sport league this summer for 10 weeks on Wednesdays, its humble pie, but its about shot making, and I feel you get what you deserve.
If im not mentally fried at the end of June, I'll probably continue the experience in the fall.
Thanks for the conversation.

Re: What to do?
If you haven't tried it yet, go to a health food store and get some hyaluronic acid tablets. You could also order them off the internet. I would at least study it out on the internet. Might help your knee.
It lubricates the joint so if there is no joint it might be too late but worth looking into.

Eric,
Is this the same guy that tanked on you earlier this year? If so, it's time to reconfigure your team for next year.
Wondering.
Take care of that knee!

Shockingly its not, Marc was in it to win it till the bitter end.
He got the message from earlier in the year.
My middle man quit on us.
Im going to start taking glucosamine tablets today, everyday, to see if that makes a difference.

Re: What to do?
I feel for you. There are a few guys in my league like this, I've bowled with some on a few occasions where I told them to shut up or go home, even though that would have cost us the game. That's no fun. Even in the middle of competition you can still have fun losing when everyone has the right attitude. But one bad attitude can make winning suck.
I say have a talk with the rest of your team, then have a talk with the problem guy (either as a team or just you, whichever you think is better). If he doesn't get it, don't invite him back.

Re: What to do?
Sorry about your knee, man. Glucosamine may help...can't hurt. Do you plant or slide a bit? Do you stretch before bowling? I can tell you how to make a special slide sole I'm developing if you need it.
As for your teammate...you describe someone who can play out to the right, but can't get theball back when he moves inside. You're right about the confidence issue. I have a guy like that and have been working with him on release and arsenal. He is very accurate and, now that he has a couple balls that will turn, can finally go to third arrow. But, he is so used to 2nd arrow that he often hits 2nd instead of 3rd....working on that in practice.
If he won't work on it, you may have to make a change on the roster. I hate doing that and have only done it once for a guy who had a terrible attitude and brought the whole team down.

Re: What to do?
I posted the above on my facebook page.MegaMav's Facebook wrote: "...Thats the great thing about sports, you play to win, and I dont care if you dont have any wins, you go play to win. When you start telling me it doesnt matter, then retire. Get out, cause it matters." ~ Herm Edwards
More people should have the killer instinct and drive Herm Edwards does.
Too many people quit because they can.
Never quit, ever.
You can call me a lot of things, but quitter aint one of them.

Im still stewing over last week.
Losing by 7 because you mailed it in before the game started is exactly the reason why you never quit. Because its not over till its over.
Thanks for the advice guys, I may have a talk tomorrow night.
The expectations of your teammates and the league are too high to quit.
This isnt a mixed league.

Re: What to do?
Sorry, but the guy's gotta go. You "mail it in" on me just once and I'll kick you so hard in the butt the next time you come down to bounce you'll land in a major body of water.
That crack about "one more and I'm outta here" would have had ME packing his bag right then and there and telling him,"Why wait? Go now and beat the crowd out the door. And don't let the knob hit you on the way out,"
So he wants to be a Captain next season, does he? There's your reason to dump his sorry butt right there. If he complains just tell him "Oops,my bad. Thought you were starting your own team. This one already has a Captain. Me."

Re: What to do?
Only slightly, I still cant bowl more than one back to back session a week, even then, I still experience pain, but can work through it.
As opposed to before, on the 2nd day, the pain was so agonizing, I had to stop.
I'll need to head back to the doctor to get a referral to an orthopedist.

My personal opinion is that if your going to mail it in, you don't need to be for it. I'll take the dummy score. But, on the other side of this, maybe he had something else going on in his life outside of bowling. Not an excuse, but if your not gonna even try, why show up?
