Quick question about thumb callouses

Post by Narcissus80 »

Lately my left thumb where you bend has a callus at the base of the thumb. Its started to hurt the last time i had bowled. I did have the pro shop flatten the edge of the thumb hole. Is there anything that can be recommended to put on the thumb too??

Your thumbhole might be to large causing you to squeeze the ball. Use tape to snug up the fit if this is the case.

If the beveling of the thumb doesn't help I would have my grip re-evaluated.
A pitch change with the thumb might be needed or possibly a span change.

Here are a few links from the BowlingChat Wiki for proper fitting...

You could also be developing a neuroma at the base of your thumb. Putting a small notch in the thumb hole where the ulnar nerve touches it can help alleviate the pressure.

I've had a similar issue, but with the tendon at the base of my thumb.
I had 2 issues 1) the thumb was too big and 2) my span was too long.

It took a new fit and then time off during the summer to be able to bowl without pain.
I powered through the rest of the season with the new grip before taking time off.

As for some type of protector, I don't know.
Maybe you could use athletic tape around the base of your thumb.
Something like this ,Maybe?
