College Bowling / recruiting
I am sure some of you have lived through this and i am looking for advice / guidance
8 months ago my son was pretty set to get done with Jr/HS bowling after next year.. and find a job welding. Nothing wrong with that, he is putting in a lot of hard work into both bowling and welding at school even with the sillyness of High School and Covid.
He then found a tech college that had both welding and bowling.. a few videos and email later I am now looking at visiting 3 colleges out of state and 1 in state.
Help... Can someone please shed some light on this whole process. What should he be looking for in a program, Where can we look for financial aid.. or just any advice at all!! My other 3 kids hit the world running, so this is the first time looking at schools and programs...
Thanks

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Are any of the colleges offering bowling scholarships?
Something to consider, he has a background in welding and skilled trades are in demand. If he likes welding and loves bowling, there should be adult leagues waiting with open arms.
If he's thinking about going into engineering, that's a whole different ballgame.

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Mo, in a YouTube video called "New Reality - Rules Have Changed", talks about going to college on a bowling scholarship at the 7 minute mark.
Bowling may be the way to get a paid-for education leading to a job in the bowling industry.
Whether you can make money bowling versus just enjoying the sport is another question (well there is always endorsements).
Welding has may specialties that can garner good money.
One example that intrigued me as a scuba diver was underwater welding - extremely well-paying and scary dangerous.
My vote ( not that it matters at all ) is get a good job welding for a living and bowl for fun.

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
He made a smart choice going into welding in High School.. Really happy he likes it and seems to be doing well at it. That said, he loves bowling and would like that competitive bowling to continue for a while yet. If he chooses to go tech 2 year school.. added bonus. He gets 2 years more training for his future career and gets to continue competitive bowling.
anyone have any experience with the NAIA site? Sadly the 4 year schools that have interest in him dont offer much in the way of $$ so its academic scholarships or hello student loans...

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Scholarships are basically given on a per school basis with the money being allocated as the school deems fit. There are dollars out there, but you'll have to look deep to find it.ICURNVS wrote: ↑April 28th, 2021, 1:43 pm He made a smart choice going into welding in High School.. Bowling is considered a club sport at many colleges which often means, little or no expenses are absorbed by the institution. In spite of the lack of funding, the clubs somehow manage to survive.
Regardless of how competition is funded, bowling at the collegiate level is exciting!

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
All the schools he is looking at are either NAIA or USBC Collegiate .. were staying away from anything club based.

That’s just the governing body they play, doesn’t mean they’re not clubs (Mckendree Men’s is USBC and Women’s is NAIA)

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Both NAIA and NCAA bowling is governed by USBC Collegiate.

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Only women's programs are going to be NCAA. and unless its an NAIA school most mens programs will be club sports. Don't let a program being a club sport deter you from choosing it. A lot of schools that are club still offer scholarships. Wichita State University and Lindenwood University are a couple of top programs in the country, are club programs, and they offer scholarships. The key is just asking before making a decision.
Re: College Bowling / recruiting
It's been a while since I coached in the college environment. Even back then, there was conversation about the direction NCAA was contemplating in regard to bowling. It's nice to see the NCAA is still involved in some capacity.MarckMcFly wrote: ↑May 6th, 2021, 10:13 pm Only women's programs are going to be NCAA. and unless its an NAIA school most mens programs will be club sports. People who are interested in procuring funds need to know, whatever scholarship money is out there, it seems to go pretty fast. Rosters fill out quickly too. While it seems like there is all the time in the world, a person thinking about going to college (hate to say it) needs to make a decision fairly quickly. There are more than a few promising high school bowlers facing the same dilemma.

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
Just an update to this whole process....
My Son did commit to a 2yr college that is attached to a university.. so after his 2yrs welding he could flip to the university for an additional 2 years.
What i learned in this whole process....
Community colleges that offer bowling do not offer scholarships, instead they just offer $$$$ towards admission.
Universities and Colleges can and do offer scholarships.. ( one school offered him $28000..problem was the school cost 58000 a year to attend)
I got introduced to the wonderful world of FAFSA... (student loans)
IF you have a child that wants to continue that HS career into college:
Go to that schools athletic page.. go to bowling team page.. and usually there is a recruitment/im interested form you can fill out.
Send coaches videos of your kids bowling.
attend Jr tournaments.. there are always college coaches lurking about
Find a way to get to JR Gold.. There are TONS of colleges there all looking for every level of bowler..

Re: College Bowling / recruiting
For anyone reading about this topic, while bowling well enough to deserve a scholarship is important, it cannot be stressed enough, scholastic credentials rank right up there with bowling ability. That would obvious, but in too many cases, scholastics are ignored.
Colleges want / need good bowlers, they want good students as well.

To that end, Some schools require SAT.. Some ACT.. and the Tech college he is attending required neither. Tho he will have to take the ACT. This is a requirement for NAIA.
