PBA Marshall Holman 37 Pattern

Post by Glenn »

I am toying with the idea of competing in a tournament this year where all rounds will be played on the PBA Marshall Holman 37. The host center is smaller with all wood lanes, and well worn the last time I played there. I only bowl there once a year. I didn't do well against the locals when competing on their house pattern. I did much better last year when they started using tournament patterns. I want to go much better prepared this year, if possible. Since all of my local houses are synthetic lanes, I question whether begging to have the pattern put down for practice would help much.

So, I seek your ideas on how to play this pattern, what equipment might be better, etc. I always sign up to bowl the first squad when the lanes are fresh (and my scoring is better), but still have 15 minutes of practice on them.

Thanks.

Mav,

I am pretty sure it is the Marshall Holman 37 (see attached). I bowled that tournament last year on the Johnny Petraglia 37.

Smooth reacting symmetrical without shine, play outside of 5.

Thanks for the reply, Mav. Your suggestions confirm what I thought I needed.

I was thinking solid, not shiny, smooth
I used a Roto Grip Disturbed @ 2000 last year on the JP37 with great success in the first game, and it will be in the bag this year.
I need something for when the lane's transition; something not shiny in the <0.035 DIFF category, I believe.
I just ground out a score in the 2nd and 3rd games last year -- had grip and rip guys to my left using strong, shiny balls that did not carry.
And, I think I will pack a stronger urethane @ 1000/1500 -- just in case.
Oh, and a spare ball!

Thots?

Just ball down to a lighter shelled symmetrical and bump the hook you make on the gutter.

Mav,
Excuse my ignorance, but I am not sure what you mean by "lighter shelled".
Can you explain?

Whew! I am glad I asked as I was thinking thinner shell and heavier core.
One of my choices is a Rave that is said to be good on old, worn-out wooden lanes.
I have never had much use for it, but might be usable in this situation with some surface.
My less aggressive stuff is either hybrid or pearl.

Thanks so much, Mav.
I believe I have my arsenal.
I need to get with one of my team mates who is much better at bumping the gutter than I.
He plays out to the 1-2 board where I am less comfortable - he can give me some advice.

Just roll the ball nice, keep your angles square and relax.
Believe in yourself.
