How many average games can you bowl before wrist pain

Post by krava » January 19th, 2020, 8:56 am

This varies for everyone, but for the people that don't use a wrist device and actually get their wrist under the ball how many games can you get before it starts to hurt? I know that more is not better but I wanted to try to get as much muscle memory as possible and repetitions in. I threw 16lbs for about 4 games and then 15lbs for 5. I had 9 games in and my wrist started hurting at the end and I iced it when I got home. Everything else feels good not sore anywhere.

Also do anyone do strength training for their wrist? I haven't ever done that. i have done some wrist curls before but not very often.

No points for stoicism ...

Here are a few videos by Sam Webster. Sam teaches anatomy, he often used humor in his lessons. It's good to know how your body is designed and how it functions.

WRIST CURLS ONLY WORK ONE PLANE OF MOTION, NOT THE FULL RANGE OF MOTION!!!

We have an ongoing topic on Fitness that has some video on forearm and wrist development.

Jeff is a trainer and therapist. He has worked with professional athletes in MLB and NFL, was the Mets trainer for 4 years. Every video I've watched by Jeff has a detailed textual description which you might want to print ...

I'd remind you to refer to Jim Merrell's lesson plans and grade your progress.

Pain vs fatigue are different. Trying to hold your hand cocked and cupped the whole swing will take some getting used too. John always has great posts about fitness and is spot on about Jim’s post for you.

Too much muscle, too much grab.
Get your fit checked and stop manipulating the ball so much.
Use the wiki fit to get a good, comfortable base fit.

A point which probably cannot be over emphasized.
Eric has probably drilled thousands of balls for many folks, I'd place a lot of stock in his advice born of experience. He no doubt can spot things about a bowler's swing and grip in nothing flat!
Test a relaxed grip at home, just letting it roll off your fingers. Trying varying pressure, you will see and feel a difference.
How hard do you squeeze a baseball to throw it?

Harken back to the analogy of holding a bird gently enough to feel its heart beat with just enough strength to keep it from flying away.

My guess is that most bad bowling habits are rooted in a bad fit.
As has been stated many times, education is the key.
I think every PSO should emphasize this and make sure their customers are aware.

A PSO is in essence performing surgery in which your hand is being connected to your ball. A PSO is really a bowling doctor.

As with many things, until you really believe it, you might as well not know it.

wrist is alot better now, I guess it was fatigue. Thanks for the videos will have to check them out.

I actually dropped a few balls yesterday on the ground. I try not to put any grip with the thumb and dig in with my fingers. I will have to get some video up soon.

Ouch !!!

:o

Sometimes fatigue or boredom can distract us.
You most likely have a pre shot routine, part of which involves picking up your ball thru assuming your grip.
Among other things, the expression keep your eyes on the ball applies.
There are a lot of videos on pre shot routines.
Note this bowler's ritual and attention to detail and focus on that important moment.

Hopefully you missed your feet.

No video required. Sounds to me like your fit isn't very good. The ball shouldn't fall off your hand until you release it from your hand. You shouldn't have to hold the ball the ball should hold you.

As you’ve reduced your grip pressure with your thumb then you probably need tape in the thumb hole. The hole should be snug which maybe your original release hid. It’s another reason why your wrist would hurt as you are trying to grip the ball differently.

Usually the simplest reason.

Interesting topic. When I bowled competitively, PBA regional events, etc., I never got any wrist pain. To this day near age 60 I may not bowl as much but I still do not get wrist pain.

I bowled today. I paid for 1 game. I had to grab my wrist somewhere around the 6th frame. I don't know what happend. Threw more shots and then didn't happen again. Then paid for 2 more games and never had that issue. Wrist is fine as I type right now. I think the problem is not letting the ball fall fast enough in the pushaway down . My hand doesn't have very good grip pressure and I have very small fingers compared to most people.

I will keep an eye out on what causes it to hurt as I haven't narrowed it down. If it was on the pushaway down I would grab my wrist there and stop, it has to be close to the release or at the release. Maybe somehow grabbing it at the bottom with a bent wrist.

Consider printing off your description of this problem and talking to your doctor about it.

It might appear to some, that you are trying to force your body to fail.

Time between shots?

An ounce of prevention ...

Except from the article below

Bowlers often have to throw a 16-pound ball using different spinning techniques that put unbalanced forces on the hand and wrist. Bowling too many times and too rapidly can magnify the occurrence of wrist tendonitis. Common bowling related injuries are elbow tendonitis, shoulder tendonitis, herniated disc, anterior and posterior ligament (ACL & PCL) tear, etc.

Until his mind understands to work with gravity and roll the ball this cycle will continue
