Difference 2000 grit + polish vs 4000 grit + polish
Hello all,
I would like to know if it will give much difference if you do a bowling ball resurfacing and sand it to 2000 grit and finish it with a polish compared to the same ball but sanded up to 4000 grit with the same polish.
I'm still a beginner in the technical side of bowling and although I really am interested in understanding everything you need to help in a proshop, I know I need to study more.
But one of my friends his bowling ball has become pretty dull (Intense Fire). He didn't like the reaction OOB as it was waiting too long. He asked me to let it 'shine' again but since he didn't like the OOB, I was thinking of sanding it to 2000 grit and giving it a polish of 800 instead of 1500. Would that work out?

There are no absolutes if you don’t have a scanner but you can get close. If OOB was too long, then a 2000 w/polish will be even longer as most OOB are 500 compound or 500/1000 compound. The best way is to have pads/polish with you and throw a shot and make adjustment to get desired result.

Thanks for your reply. I have been told that Storm's 1500 grit + polish is 500 - 1000 - 2000 - 4000 followed by Step 2 compound. So that's why I would skip the 4000 grit and use a 800 polish instead of 1500.44boyd wrote:There are no absolutes if you don’t have a scanner but you can get close. If the Intense Fire is too clean through the front, try a hand-rubbed 500/2000 finish with fresh pads and skip the step2/polish.
The Trucut pads are really good for hand-rubbed finishes.

That seems interesting and I was thinking of the same thing but the problem is my friend wants it polished so it shines and looks prettier. He doesn't give me much of a choice if he really wants it to shine so it looks not so used as it is now.snick wrote:If the Intense Fire is too clean through the front, try a hand-rubbed 500/2000 finish with fresh pads and skip the step2/polish.

Based on the variations in opinions that you will find on internet chat sites, I would suggest that you try both ways and see for yourself... one picture is worth a thousand words!

Try Brunswick's favorite 500 grit with compound on top of it. Shiny with and earlier reaction to frictionJochemke wrote:

Thank you I will try that out as soon as i get a chance.
For now I have sanded it up to 2000 and then added a less shiny polish. He's happy with the reaction so far.

You've got to remember that storms 1500 grit is not halfway between 1000 & 2000 grit there are different industry standards. If I'm right storms 1500 is the equivalent of abralon 4000. And then polish! Hope this helps

Re: Difference 2000 grit + polish vs 4000 grit + polish
For the Storm factory finish, I sand the ball (120/220 rigid sanding discs on CAB to remove the track and cut the gripping holes square with the surface)/360/500/1000 SIAAIR, Step2 compound to remove the sanding lines and set the surface to 1500grit, then Storm Polish.
I rarely use 2000/3000/4000 pads under polish. I feel like this tends to dish the holes, and Step2 or Royal compound provide a more consistent result.
