I recently saw Anthony Simonsen throwing a backup ball on the stepladder finals televised last Sunday night on FS1 (now available on youtube). It was the new Storm yellow urethane ball. It was drilled pin down, hole down, almost like a Rico layout. I was surprised that it would not track over the xhole. But then I thought about it and ask this question:
When a bowler throws a backup ball does the PAP and track remain the same, just the axis rotation becomes negative?

Re: Question about a backup ball
I went back and re-watched Simonsen rolling his back-up ball.
I distinctly heard the ball rolling over the balance hole.
I am surprised he didn't have a ball drilled to accommodate this release. I am assuming they have a limit on how many balls they have available for tournament play and he didn't want to give up a space for it.

Re: Question about a backup ball
I don't know about that, I just watched Kyle Sherman's vlog and he had 21 balls with him including like 3 or 4 balls he drilled while at the tournament. So I don't think there's a limit to how many balls you can have. I think it's more likely he made a spur of the moment decision to throw a backup and didn't have a ball drilled for it. If I remember correctly they even mentioned that he made the choice to do it after watching the match before his.EricHartwell wrote:I went back and re-watched Simonsen rolling his back-up ball.

Re: Question about a backup ball
I know at one time, there was a limit as to how many balls one could have in the bowler's paddock. I wonder if he is citing how many he travels with versus at the center during match play.
I've not found a reference yet.
I'm sure someone on the forum can cite a reference.
Given a finite amount of space, it would seem that a limit might be imposed.

Re: Question about a backup ball
No, he was videoing in the paddock, specifically mentioned the word paddock. He pointed out that there were probably only 4 bowler's worth of balls in there and there were probably close to 80+ there. I wonder if the rules are different for this tournament because of the number of different patterns they were bowling on? He did also mention that he normally wouldn't have that many but for the fact that they were bowling on so many different patterns.kajmk wrote:I know at one time, there was a limit as to how many balls one could have in the bowler's paddock. Re: Question about a backup ball
So, since finals are match play he technically has the ability to have unlimited balls available to him. I would imagine if he's going to start utilizing a backup shot more regularly he may start having one drilled up to have on hand in the future.EricHartwell wrote:Here is what I found...

Re: Question about a backup ball
When Simonsen was throwing the backup ball he was in a World Bowling Tour event, and their tournaments have a 6 ball limit.

Ah... That's true, that's a whole different rules set. I forgot about that because their scoring is different too.2lefthands wrote:When Simonsen was throwing the backup ball he was in a World Bowling Tour event, and their tournaments have a 6 ball limit.
