Out of nowhere, during practice today, I noticed my ball wasn't hooking as much and hitting the pins like a wet napkin.
I noticed the oil line on my ball was much further right than where it normally is.
I think I was chicken winging the ball, topping it off my hand.
I might have been muscling it too hard, which is usually the cause.
Any tips on stopping this before it becomes a problem?

Re: Chicken wing cause?
There are a few causes but without seeing a video am only guessing. For a right hander, it can be late timing and the ball is pulled down from the top of the swing lead by the bowling shoulder, it can be the ball getting left of your head at the top of the swing and then having to swing the ball around your body, it can be a pivot step that is too far right causing a similar issue, it can be a bad fit that encourages you to release around the ball and not through.

Re: Chicken wing cause?
Three root causes for chicken winging: timing, timing and timing. Problen is to determine what causes bad timing. swing starting height, feet speed, correct first timing point for example... many variables that can be the reason why....
Needles to say, the swing itself should be relaxed and quite straight. You start the swing from proper height according to speed and the ball should come near the shoulder line at back. Time for the swing motion is quite constant so feet must be set at proper speed according to the swing.
Video is required to any conclusion.

Re: Chicken wing cause?
Solved the problem. Had my friend take video and found out my swing was way off the tempo of my feet.
Re: Chicken wing cause?
One possibility is thumb staying in the ball too long/not exiting quick enough.markkuhn wrote:Out of nowhere, during practice today, I noticed my ball wasn't hooking as much and hitting the pins like a wet napkin.

There was great BTM article on this several years ago. Can't remember which issue but I came across it recently as I was reading some old back issues .
The question was asked by a reader - and a few experts plus Bob S gave their opinions. Several reason were put forward including fit etc. All valid but not the same from the various contributors.

Focus on leading with the inner elbow.
Looks like they are all practicing to throw it in the gutter/R channel
unless the ball speed is about 10 mph

It was the coaching forum in BTM issue of Oct 1996.
Wow! I can't believe it was that far back!
I guess, the more things change, the more they remain the same!
