For real?! Lanes that aren’t flat?????
How can that be!? I mean I know that floors can sag in an old house; but in a bowling alley????
Since when!?

Re: Lanes That Aren’t Flat????
Nothing fake about this. Its a caused by environmental factors like temperature and humidity.
It can affect ball motion more than the oil on the lane.
I've witnessed balls falling in the gutter on a 35 foot pattern at 40 feet. You cant fight gravity.

Re: Lanes That Aren’t Flat????
use the forum search function and look up topography. There are many threads discussing the lane surface.soupy1957 wrote:For real?! Lanes that aren’t flat?????

Interesting info about topography!
This week I chat with both Jerry Petrole and Ron Hatfield.
We discuss a great new app that Jerry developed called Track My Roll. We chat about the benefits of the app, and why Ron is a big fan of the app. We also discuss lane topography, how it happens and if anything should be done regarding the pairs at South Point. Ron also shares some coaching advice and how much is too much information when coaching a player.

Re: Lanes That Aren’t Flat????
Ok, so let’s just say that your average neighborhood bowling alley might have floors that are not flat. How can I possibly prove that, by going there and just bowling?!
I mean, my natural reaction would be never want to go in Boulder again because they don’t have flat floors!
Should I expect to see some sort of certification on the wall that says that their lanes have been inspected, and are approved for legal play?!
Is there some sort of regulation in the bowling government that says that alleys have to maintain a certain flatness?!
I mean come on!! Holy CRAP!!

Re: Lanes That Aren’t Flat????
+- 40 thousandths of an inch is the spec IIRC.
My feeling about topography is that most high-ratio house shots tend to mitigate differences in lane flatness, while flat, low-ratio sport patterns tend to exacerbate it.

For those of you who subscribe to BTM, please see my latest article entitled, "Of Black Holes and Other Unseen Obstacles." It deals exclusively with issues of topography.

Re: Lanes That Aren’t Flat????
Easier lane conditions tend to mask any issues with an uneven lane. Uneven lanes with a sport pattern put down tends to make that pattern even harder.soupy1957 wrote:

Having bowled in more than a few traveling leagues, there were times when we witnessed the ball become airborne. Not a particularly good feeling

Bowling is more nerdy than most think, welcome to our world... most of the knowledge you seek you will find here, just don’t get overwhelmed, Rome wasn’t built in a day...soupy1957 wrote:
