One of my teammates sends a headpin messenger and knocks down the 10 pin at least once per game . It's like watching Wes Malott bowl, it's amassing how fast that pin is moving . Last week all of a sudden the head pin is now flying across in front of the 1o pin. Anybody has any insight on why this is happening?

Thanks Richard

My opinion is that a messenger is none thing more than a lucky strike....Get in the pocket and put 10 in the pit ....the head pin is deflecting off the two into the side wall and it is all luck if the exact angle is correct to take out the 10...My guess is the reason it is in front of the ten pin is the ball hit it too thin to begin with ....Steve S

Like Steve said: The ten pin is taken care of by the six pin when everything is done correctly. I tell all my students, they should ALWAYS rely on good pocket hits and NEVER on "Off the wall" luck.

Only on the "perfect pocket strike does this occur" There are actually three classifications of strikes. http://usbcongress.http.internapcdn.net/usbcongress/bowl/equipandspecs/pdfs/pinCarryStudy.pdf

The "messenger" is the sign of a mistake that went right. To get the messenger
(head pin) to come back across the pin deck and take out the ten pin,is the sign
of the ball coming in late. Some bowlers carry these better than others, but no one
tries for these.
Unless you are a cranker who plays for light hits, you need to slow your ball
speed down a tad bit to get the shot into the strike area (the ball should be entering
the pocket so that it hits the three pin on it's left-handed third of the pin). This
forces the three into the six at the angle so the six pin comes off the kick-back
into the ten.
Unless you want to die by the messenger ten, don't live for the messenger ten.It
may look impressive, but look out for designer splits.
