Oil Pattern Ratio

Post by shutta300 »

How does the USBC determine what the oil pattern ratio is for a bowling center? I work at a bowling center where we tape the lanes to make sure the lane machine is putting the pattern out correctly. With the new classifications coming out we are wondering what our pattern would fall under. Thanks.

The latitude ratio of a pattern is how much amount of oil it is on board 25-15 in relation to amount of oil on board 10-1.

Let's say that you put on 1 unit of oil on across boards 1-10 and 2 units of oil on board 15-25 you get the double amount of oil in the middle of the lane in relation of the outer part of the lane , ratio 2:1. This is a fairly flat pattern and it is categorized as a sports pattern.

Now, if you are the proprietor and you want to start a league. Then you maybe don't want a sport pattern or the US Open pattern (1,2:1 I think), you want a easy pattern. So you put 10 times the amount of oil in the middle than outside, ratio 10:1. Now you get the famous "The House Shot" with lots of skid in the middle (around 20th board) and lots of dry friction on the outer area (around 5th board).

Sport ratio 1-3:1
Challenge 3-5:1
Recreational 5-12:1

This is the Latitude ration. Then you have the longitude ration, but that isn't any thing about the classification of the patterns.

Now, to answer your question, we need to know what pattern you use.

The league classification is a nation by nation choice and I think its only for you in the US.

This classification rules for league don't match up with by example my nation's league. In all divisions the teams can choose whatever pattern they like from Kegel's Pattern-site. In one match we can play on a sports pattern, in a match 3 hours later we can play on a house shot (in the same league and division). The top elite division is the only division that is locked to sports patterns only.

The center I work at we have an Envoy and use Defy oil. They have made so many adjustments to the pattern after they got the new machine and oil that it's just a pattern they have thrown together at this point. Scores have been way down and bowlers not so pleased and beginning to look elsewhere to bowl.
