Great shooting. Feel like I've met you before since I'm a Milwaukee area bowler myself. Revs aren't everything but they do help in creating carry and area when necessary.

how long did it take you to learn the modern release? You can't just say well today I am going to do the modern release. What is the 9x 6x 7x what is all that mean though?

It's How many strikes he had that game.
9 strikes, 5 strikes, 6 strikes
"REMEMBER, it isn't how much the ball hooks, it's where."

I just decided to do it and it worked. Just thinking about a loose wrist.
The uncupping at the release area is not something you make happen. In order to get it right you have to hold the ball with a light grip and a slight cup in the backswing. If you are still holding the ball with a light grip on the forward swing when the ball reaches the release area your thumb will come out quickly. After it does the weight of the ball will drop onto your fingertips and when it does your hand will automatically uncup. It is not something you do as much as it is something you let happen. That is why you need a light grip with your thumb. If your thumb is gripping tightly where the thumb's knuckle is bent upward it won't happen. In practice try an see how light you can hold the ball until you see when it is too light. When done right you will feel like you are dropping the ball onto the alley. You have to make sure your hand is behind the ball when getting into the release area.
Remember it is something you let happen and not something you make happen.

Re: Modern release from an old urethane guy
I'm one of those old urethane guys. From the school of lift. I found the modern release after pitching batting practice for my daughters fastpitch softball teams for 8 years. The drop curve ball is the same hand motion. I came back to the game of bowling with what I am considering too many revs. Too much hand. I have been struggling with stronger equipment. The only time I am comfortable is when everybody else is complaining about the lanes being too oily. Otherwise I am forced to play 4th and 5th arrow. Not a comfort zone for the old urethane player. The muscle memory is difficult to change. I am trying to add speed to get back to matched. Easier said than done. It is definitely a work in progress. I am tempted to get to a wrist brace to limit the wrist movement but am reluctant because when I use the modern release the ability to rev the ball is effortless and when I can get lined up the pin action is a sight to behold.

Radical Rack Attack Pearl seems to be all the ball I need on a THS night. Have not found the need to play deeper than 3rd arrow.
(Also the essential component for increasing revs is acceleration of the fingers through the ball after the thumb exits.)

Wooden lanes (long hook zone)
Cupped in stance and let weight of ball uncup the wrist at the bottom of the swing then accelerate.

Re: Modern release from an old urethane guy
Modern release improved stats. Plastic ball for spares. Had trouble with 4 and 7 pins earlier in the season.
