Bowling in Rochester, NY - Help my memory

Hey, to older bowlers in the Rochester area -- I seem to remember that Gates Bowl used to be 70 lanes when I went there for YBT and travel league. The website lists it as 48 lanes. Is my memory failing me, or has the center been downsized?

Also, does Empire still have the lanes downstairs? I always preferred them to the upstairs lanes.

Thanks!

I don't know if Gates downsized at some point, but Empire Lanes does still have the two levels (32/32, I believe). That's where I bowled youth league in the 70s and I recently got to watch my niece bowl there and it still had the same layout I remembered. All that was missing was VanHalen on the juke box...

as far as i know Gates has always had 48 lanes. because the lanes are straight across i dont know where they would put the other 22 lanes if they did take them out at one point. i grew up in rochester and started bowling travel and YBTs around 2000.

olympic bowl had 72 + 8 candlepin lanes that were later converted to 10 pin.It was part of olympic park that had an amusement park, arcade, roller rink, pool hall, driving range, batting cages and at one time a western village. As a kid it was one stop shopping for fun.
I can see the site right now if I walk out the front door of my motorcycle shop.there is office type stuff there now.
