Bowling-related apps for mobile devices

Post by VLe »

Looking for recommendations on useful bowling-related apps. I prefer iPad, but feel free to post apps for android too. Not only for video editing but I would also like to store my drilling, gear and layout information, track scores and equipment used etc.

Yesterday I stumbled upon this app called Bowlsheet 2 (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bowlshe ... 94855?mt=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). It seems to have a lot of features, almost everything you could possibly ask for a bowling-related mobile app, except video analysis. This could also be useful for pro shops to use and store data about customers. Downside is that it is pretty costly and has not been updated for a while. Does anyone had any experience with this app?

Few apps that I use regularly and can recommend:

Hudl Technique: Slow Motion Video Analysis (former Ubersence), By UberSense Inc.
I have used this a lot on both android and iPad. Works great for me. Exporting the videos out of the program could be simpler in iPad version, but it can be done. Basic use of this program is free.

I have used this app to calculate revs this way:
1. Record slow-motion -video of release (place a piece of tape near the pap to visualize the ball motion better if necessary)
2. Forward the video to a point where ball exit fingers
3. Touch the video timer to make it zero. Then forward the video until the ball have made 3 revs and check the timer (for example 0,66s/3rev).
4. Calculate the results like this: 1/(0,66/3)*60 = 273 rev/min

This is not as accurate method as the classic frame-based calculations but I have found that using iPad’s 120fps camera and making few analyzes gives me enough accuracy for this purpose. There is roughly 4 rev/min difference in every 0,01s/3revs.

Coach's Eye, By TechSmith Corporation
Another great video analysis tool. I have heard many good things about this program and tried it once (android-version). For some reason I have settled on Hudl Technique.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/coachs- ... 06138?mt=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Bowl Speed, By Handtechnics
Simple and cheap app to calculate the speed of the bowling ball. It gives you release speed, pin contact speed and impact momentum. Big thanks to user bowl1820 recommending this app recently in this forum.

Hi,
I have some apps:

PinPal: For tracking every single shot, tournament, league and have stats on everything, Average, average by game, score distribution, fist ball average, strikes, spare, single pin, multiple pins, splits, opens, al leaves. Graphics on per-game or per-week basis, etc. It lets you set what bowling alley you play and what ball you're using.

Bowling Scorecard: great app if you want to track teams, it gives you more or less the same data that PinPal does, but you can also compare with teammates. It also has a great Tactic Board to draw on a bowling lane picture.

12 Strikes: another app like Pin Pal, it also lets you capture where you're standing and where you're aiming, shot by shot.

BowlCalc: great little app to calculate Handicap, Average Change (you set games played, total pins, current average, games per set, and how many pins you want to change in your avg. and it gives you a gain and loss series you need). It also calculates your ballspeed. It lets you find USBC Members by name and ID.

Coach Note: It is a Tacticboard for many sports, you can draw and animate your drawings.

Tempo: it's really a golf app for Apple Watch, it lets you estimate your swing tempo, comparing your upswing with your downswing, the bad news is you have to pay for each swing you measure.

I've seen many more, but these are worth of mentioning.
If you think I helped, please click on the "+" button, Thanks.

The Bowling Ball Manager-app seems pretty nice altough it seems to not have option where you can insert ball layouts (dual angle etc.) and other basic stuff. The UI could be also a little better especially for iPad version. Is there any other app that can store this data better? Yet again the Bowlsheet 2 seems to have all the desired options but I would still want to get some feedback before purchasing it (cost's $29.99).

I love stats and use a new app called Lanetalk which automatically syncs my scores from the scoring system in realtime. Have really nice collection of stats and leaderboards too. :)

http://www.lanetalk.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

iOS:
https://itunes.apple.com/se/app/lanetal ... 63132?mt=8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... k&hl=en_US" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I really recommend it. Check it out! :lol:

How does it sync with the center? What do you have to do?

I've been using a very basic score tracker - Bowling Scorer (free) - tracks pins. Manually entered but very easy to do. I can look back over averages and such.

And of course League Secretary - our center isn't handing out recaps anymore and since it's all on League Secretary, I don't even mind. I have my wife and my in-laws on it.

I also have Track My Roll, which works to track my roll down the lane. It's buggy, it will NOT track my IQ Tour Pearl (it can't seem to see it on the lane) but does ok with everything else.

The center has to activate Lanetalk in the scoring system, then before you start bowl you open the app -the app shows all ongoing games and you select your lane and player name. That's it. From now on all your pin falls is sent to your app in real time - until you end the bowling session. Almost to easy. :lol:

Took a look there's just a bit more too it than that.

The center has to have a version of their scoring systems with the Lanetalk system on it (Lanetalk says that it's on most systems already) and have it activated if it isn't already.

Then the center has to create a free account on the website.

Doesn't look to be a whole lot of centers in the US signed up so far, So that means most users would have to convince their center to get the system up and running first.

For those that want to keep track of their stat's, You might take a look at Premier Bowling Scorekeeper (aka: Bowl! Drill! Score! Stat!, or BDSS!)

It's for Android devices and costs .99 cents and keeps track of all kinds of stuff. You have to input the info though. It also as a ball speed calculator.

I have it and am a beta tester for it,, it works good.

Tenpin Toolkit seems okay too, costs money though..

The best phone I've seen for videoing bowlers is the LG V30 (LG G6 too, but worse camera, barely).
Why? You can adjust ISO and shutter speed on video too! That means you can get 1080p 60fps with crystal clear images if you pause it. You can see every handposition, every step, 120 photos per second, if you like. No motion blur or anything.

I like to use Coach's Eye for analyzing on my phone, already paid for it so.
