Putting new ball ideas into reality

The concept of a new ball.What it takes to become reality.Now Mo,help
me out here,since you would know.This is my take on the process.

The sales and marketing department sets up written outline stating
what they are looking for in their next ball.The next hook monster,or
the perfect benchmark ball etc.They describe what features the ball
should have from core,cover,color,logos,etc.Then they need to decide
what price range the ball should be in.

After brainstorming,the next step is sending the outline and stats
to R&D department.With the help of CAD checking whether all the
suggested items the sales and marketing department wants is feasible.
and stands up to their model of performance they are looking at.Shape
of core,diffs.rgs, coverstock,etc will match-up.

Next after the R&D is finished,a prototype is produced,and is given
to the sales and marketing department for local testers to use.Most
companies will have a few guys in the local area they use for this purpose.

This is where it gets tricky,please correct me on this.Friends of mine
that have been testers before.About five years ago and later.They are
going in blind to what the ball is supposed to do.The testers are given
a performance criteria sheet ,because the testers have to know if
the ball the are testing is performing based on they areas.

The coverstocks are all the same color ,whether they are the same or
different.The company does everything it can to keep the testers
from seeing down into the ball to see core shape.The reason,that if
people know anything about what's inside of the ball they have reason
to start judging the ball based on their knowledge of cores,and what
the core shape should do.



At this time everything about the ball is put into categories,breakpoint
shapes,total hook,etc.Then all the info is put into the database, to match
the new ball, with prior balls in the company catalog to make sure they
do not overlap with any other balls.

When the company is almost completed with all the testing,it sends
the ball to several amateurs and pros on staff to get more data and feedback.
When all the testing is done, all the data is put together and they come
to a final conclusion on the ball.If the conclusions of the testing need
tweaking it will be done.Then when everything is within the parameters
of what they expect,it is then put into production,along with a marketing and
advertising campaign .

I believe that far more elaborate than it is in reality. Criteria are set up for a new ball. R&D goes to work on it. Small group tests prototypes. Ball is decided on , then marketing goes to work on it. Technology allows us to measure a lot more. Not anywhere as many people and opinions are involved anymore. We have CAD, CATS, and ball throwers for some companies. The one intangible is forgiveness.

You have to send a couple of the new ball to USBC along with a check to get it approved.

In the process, when ALL the decisions are made. A pilot run is made to check that the production ball, fully logoed, is exactly what it was intended to be. At that point the balls sent to the USBC for approval.
