Hi all,
I'm involved with creating a mobile app that tracks shots similar to CATS or Digitrax. The difference is that it runs on a tablet or phone and doesn't require a tripod. I have a prototype created and have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help get the first iteration finished. The link is below and includes my demo video which is also on youtube. I'd love to hear your thoughts. The reception has been really good so far! If you care to make a small donation I would be most grateful.

What's the projected cost of the App going to be?

Hello TrackMyRoll, I've thinking about your app and I recall when Apple started selling the AppleWatch, there was supossed to be an app that could track your golf swing, that app by Ping never came out, there's another one called "tempo" but is not very good. Since you're programming for iOs, I think that besides tracking all aspects of ball motion, your app could track the swing with the AppleWatch, you could use it to compare speeds between shots, deviations from the intended line, accelerations prior to the point of release, etc. For golfers it is considered a good swing that in which downswing time is 1/3 of that of the upswing, I guess for us bowlers the ratio should be similar. I think it would be great to have such a tool.

Thanks very much. I'm not exactly sure about the price yet but I'd guess somewhere between 15 and 25.

I like the idea about an add on for Apple Watch as well. Once we work through the bugs related to tracking the path of the ball, and then making an Android version we'll turn attention to additional functions like this.

Hey Jerry. I will back the campaign when I get home from work.

Also, I have some experience with QA work on iOS mobile apps. If you need any testers, let me know. I'd love to help! :D :)

Do you have data that compares your app's metrics with CATS data?
If this is accurate your pricing is almost giving it away ...

Given the physics variables, the imagination can run quite wild with possibilities. Depending on what this actually accurately measures, this could transcend mere observation of an event.

I can't speak for Jerry, but I asked about accuracy and his response was:

"...we are going for accuracy within an inch, even with a hand held device. Lane distances past 40 are the biggest challenge as there is not nearly as much resolution to work with at that point."

It's complicated due to the skewed perspective and other variables to contend with. My feeling is that whatever they can manage now will get better over time, and there may be angles/perspectives that improve accuracy even with the best possible algorithms.

I believe these apps could really be a huge breakthrough for the serious bowler who would like to use data to analyze and improve their game. Take a chance and help support and encourage this type of work!

Actually I can envision a LOT more than just shot tracking. Given well conceived data bases this can become a ball rep in your pocket. If the data is there and the observation precise this can be the biggest revolution in ball selection, drilling etc.
Baseball, Golf, and Tennis are simple by comparison to all of the variables in bowling.

Very interesting. If I were a ball company exec, I would be researching this concept. Ditto KEGEL.
I wonder what Mo and his science cohorts think (physics, chemistry)

Computing power and capabilities are only going to improve. When I learned programming we wrote our programs on punch cards, monitors were big boxes, telecommuting was done at baud rates, input and output was line driven.

Cheers.

I've never seen Ebonite's DigiTrax in person but I can imagine similar functionality on a tablet or phone. The computing power is definitely there and the convenience cannot be beat.

Track My Roll will have analysis options, and the ability to download data into other tools (ie. spreadsheet, etc) for even more flexibility.

The industry leaders need to keep up (via development or acquisition) and make this type of technology available (affordably) to a wider audiences. It may kill the CATS market, but it will open up an entirely new one.

This has a lot more potential then just tracking shots.

Hi Jerry,
As an owner of Ebonite DigiTrax, the portability of the app is interesting.

With DigiTrax:
1) I can create a folder for individual bowlers.
2) Store all data collected in a session in that bowler’s folder.
3) On the graph option, I can select the shots I want to see, from (1) to (12) shots at one time on the graph. Viewing multiple shots on a graph is always eye opening to the athlete who feels they are accurate. (video must be at fixed position)
4) Ball speed in the first fifteen feet can be calculated.
5) Rev Rate in the first fifteen feet can be calculated.

On the Track my roll menu I see:
1) Bowler profile
2) Data sets
3) Track My Roll

Would like more information on items #1 & #2.
Reason for my questions:
Taking six shots of 10 bowlers = 60 data sets stored in one file?
This could be awkward trying to retrieve data for a bowler’s as the file grows.
