Tip for Full Rollers who cannot hook the ball

Gary's comment was in another thread.

I thought I'd create a topic in case there are any full rollers out there seeking axis rotation and hook.
guruU2 Gary Parsons wrote - One further note: for those full rollers who can not hook the ball, notice Bill Allen's starting hand position where his hand is on top of the ball -try that starting hand position and just bowl. The result will be axis rotation with hook.

Thanks to the folks that take the time to make bowling material available on YouTube.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

Work on timing, flat spot and swing plane to get the hand in a more efficient energy transfer area than on top of the ball. You can do it...

It's pretty amazing how much hook Tom Smallwood can achieve, considering he's a full roller.

It's not that many years ago that the full roller was considered totally ineffective for the modern game. It's obviously effective for Smallwood. What do you think the difference is? Rev rate?

Yes, rev rate. Smallwood is a "half thumb" full roller, note how he rolls the ball up on his wrist to keep from dropping it. Some no-thumbers are full rollers. -- JohnP

Smallwood gets his hand in a very powerful and efficient position under the equator of the ball, what I mean is inefficient is having the hand on top of the ball because you won't be able to transfer all of the energy you created with your legs, most of it will be lost at release. I am almost a full roller 3* axis tilt and have a very powerful release because of where my fingers are at the moment of release.

I think drill affects track. my old LT-48 just got signed at a pba50 event by Johnny Petraglia, but, before I had him sign it, I took it out and threw a few games with it.

I threw a clean full roller with it. right between the holes. I even tried to see if I could get it to track outside the thumb. I would get a track rings width past the thumb or hit it. when I threw it like I usually throw my equipment, it went back to a full roller. can't explain it except its the layout. I could hook it some. maybe 5 boards.

makes me think with a certain layout we could all throw a full roller. it might be different for each bowler. if thats possible, then it could be done in reverse for a bowler who thorws a full roller to track outside the thumb.
