Older guy, at best a weak stroker in best days...could "never" play inside..had to change balls. Ten board in and nose bleeds cuz it's too deep. Age is now catching up a little and ball speed is down to 10/11 mph with 14 lb ball. Needless to say, carry is zilch unless dead pocket.

Holds the ball chest high, 5 steps but pushaway is nothing but a "drop" of the ball with no backswing whatsoever.

Slow approach as well.

What would be some things to try for him to increase his ball speed?

Thanks

Get his feet moving faster.........for him it needs to feel as though he is running to the line.

Could you post video of the player? Could be a timing issue and/or a muscled swing.

What ball and layout is he using?
How is this speed measured and What are the rest of his release specs?

I'm thinking a tuned layout on a well shined Asymmetrical ball could help with his carry percentage.

No video. I moved him back two feet on the approach, told him to make sure he gets ball at least 3 feet beyond foul line (not by muscling it but just releasing later) and to improve his forward tilt a little and get his head over the ball at set up. He picked up about 1 1/2 mph off monitor so he's now at about 12...really would like him to get to 13 or 14 but don't know if I can get that. Maybe "running" to foul line will at a mile per hour.

Got another session next week. We'll get him to move faster and see what happens.

Thanks
John

I am serious when I say make him feel as though he is running to the line. Encourage him to move the feet faster and faster.......this will translate into more ball speed.

If he actually runs to the line let me know......I will treat him to a Starbucks!

If the bowler still has a hard time generating foot speed ,then have him start his swing a half step earlier. That will make him feel like he has to run to catch up.

Hi Jim,

Seriously, run? Then how should be the cadence as compared to slow slow quick quick slide?

Everyone is different, we as coaches need to flow with the athlete instead of teaching everyone the same thing, we are not creating robots here. I had the chance to spend some time bowling with Amleto Monacelli last Saturday and he really runs to the line, definitively not a photocopy bowler but it has worked very well for him and you can't argue with 20 PBA titles and 7 PBA Senior titles...

...oh and by the way, Jim "seriously" knows what he is talking about...

I have told many a bowler (those with slow deliberate footwork) to feel as though they run to the line.

It's usually best to stand on the approach slightly ahead of them and give them encouragement.

Run...run...run.

It's hard for slow deliberate bowlers to get the feet moving faster.

Also, the comment by spr3wr can work " start the pushaway earlier in the approach for a 5 step bowler. This tip was suggested by Don Johnson on this instructional video.
