The title is pretty self-explanatory in this case. I drift 8 boards to the left, largely due to a crossover step (well past the preferred balance beam) on my 1st step (4step approach).
What drills can be done to help correct this? Bonus points for any that can be done at home.

Shadow bowling (no ball) in front of a mirror. Put on a sock on your slide foot, tape a straight line with painters tape (blue non sticky) on the floor to use as reference, this line will simulate an approach board. Practice your approach slowly at first and do it looking at yourself in the mirror. You need some room in front of the mirror to do it...

Re: Drills to walk straighter
good advice.
The problem as you stated is the first step. So focus on this. Make the step (just to infront of your other foot) and go back. Do this 3 to 4 times and than make a whole approach, Start again with 3-4 times just first step and than a whole approach. repeat it over and over till the moment your brain has recorded the new movement. It will need long time to record it. Don´t give up.

Why are you using a cross over step? Understanding root cause often makes it easier to change.
Are you trying to walk around the ball to position your body for your intended launch angle?
Where do you hold the ball in your stance?
Are you standing far enough left to start with?
Can you post a video for JMerrell to see?

Re: Drills to walk straighter
Try this in practice, not during competition. Set up and see what board your right foot is on. (right handed) Put your eyes on that board at the foul line and then put yourself and the ball in motion. NEVER look up from that board at the foul line and watch yourself release the ball over that board.
This will get you to walk around the ball a bit and eliminate drifting. You will also see release and timing errors.
When you get back to competition, set up and put your eyes onto that board at the foul line for a moment. Then acquire your target and go. That moment of focus at the foul line should keep it in your mind and keep you straight.

Re: Drills to walk straighter
4 step = cross over for 1st and 3rd step
5 step = cross over for 2nd and 4th step
All the while the sliding foot should go straight ahead after every cross over and the sliding foot should 'slide in'
Is that not what it should be ? would sliding in (7 boards) help the thread starter ?
