Joe Slowinski's Drills - Grip Pressure

Post by flibblesh »

I'm looking to start adding his drills to my weekly practice, but a thought comes to mind. Unless you have your thumb tight as a vice, how do you do these drills without using any grip pressure? Specifically swing slot, foul line, relaxed swing etc.

From what I know, he recommends a pretty snug thumb hole. If the ball is falling off your hand, you might need to have your pitches checked.
Right Handed, 16-17 mph off hand (14 -15 mph on Qubica reading) ,350 rpm,PAP 4 3/4 x 1/4 up, 17 deg axis tilt, varied rotational axis deg.. usually 45+
Book Average 210+

If your span and pitches are correct, you should not need a super tight thumb hole.

My thumb comes out great according to the Don Johnson test, and my span/pitch is great, but if I use that tightness on the 2 step drill, the ball is going to go flying at the bottom of my swing.

Interested in what the Don Johnson test is? A big part of keeping the ball on your hand is having a slight wrist bend so that your thumb points slightly forward and not straight down.

Basically just a check for thumb snugness. Norm Duke has roughly the same method in his tutorial DVD.
