You don’t have to start the ball any sooner into the swing. Most people tend to control the forward movement of the ball or the downward arc or both. This motion needs to be freer by relaxing the forearm muscles and allowing the ball weight to control the motion. Doing a stationary practice drill: hinging the ball forward and downward allowing the ball weight to create the motion with minimal grip pressure gives you a sense of feeling what a free swing feels like.
Starting the ball later tends to induce muscle (increase in grip pressure) as the swing tries to catch up with the feet. A longer fourth step tends to create slower footwork. Remember the pace of the footwork needs to be: slow, slow, quick, quick & slide. Longer steps later in the approach are counterproductive to this footwork pattern.
I see earlier timing in the beginning of the approach creating a slightly later leveraged release with less effort and better use of the bigger muscles (legs) with the smaller muscles (arms ) just along for the ride.
