How to decrease tilt

Post by Binkster »

I have a high amount of tilt (24*) and I would like to reduce that a bit. What suggestions do you have to accomplish this? What mental "triggers" should be going through my mind? Any drills?
Binkster
Speed = 17-17.5 off hand
Rev Rate = 300-350
Tilt = ~20-24*
AR = 45-55
PAP = 4 3/4 rt and 3/4 up

If it were my decision, I would change finger (thumb) pitches to achieve the lower tilt and rotation. I am not saying that is the only way, but the way I would accomplish this task.

A word of caution...only specially trained professionals should attempt!

I suggest posting a video for JMerrell to look at in the coaching section. He may be able to see something in your delivery that could change your high tilt situation.

Definitely in agreement! Every analysis of jmerrell is spot on and broken down in great detail. It may be something in your approach that needs to be corrected to get you in a better position at release.

Some cues that work for me in the meantime.

Roll the ball more with less axis rotation. Really focus on rolling it with your hand directly behind the ball. Another thing that works for me is rolling your hand down instead of around. You would be surprised how much turn you actually can get this way. I bet your rev rate will increase as well. The best cue for me is really honing in on the position of the thumb and palm. Focus on keeping the thumb at as close to 12 o'clock.as possible. At release hand behind the ball as best you can with an open palm. Similar to Pete Weber or Chris Loschetter. I'm sure I botched Chris's.last name. Hopefully one of these cues if not all will help you achieve your goal. If you're not sure if your tilt is less look on your oil rings, they should be closer to the finger and thumb holes then usual. Unless you have an inverted track or a very strange pap.

Is high tilt caused by the thumb staying in the ball too long?

I don't think so. I guess one of these days I need to do some video.

I think it can be a contributing factor to higher tilt. I definitely notice it more now since I am in the process of teaching myself how to bowl lefty. My better shots I can feel a good clearing of the thumb, its a noticeable difference with less tilt and more rotation.
