Set up for Hinge Swing
Is there a proper set up to better execute the hinge swing? Many coaches are proponents of the hinge swing but nobody really mentions proper set up. I notice Chris Barnes, Tommy Jones and my pro's execute the hinge swing with elbow even with hip. Is this the proper way or should the ball be closer to the body?

Re: Set up for Hinge Swing
Jim likes to get his bowlers to set up with the ball just below the chest and as close the chest as is comfortable, with your elbow behind your back. On the key step (1st step for 4 step approach, 2nd step for 5 step approach) move the ball so the elbow doesn't get past the hip, then drop the ball in to the swing from there, hinging at the elbow.tg2n1 wrote:Is there a proper set up to better execute the hinge swing? I believe Chris Barnes doesn't move the ball AT ALL until the 3rd step in a 5 step approach. BUT, he has his elbow at his hip until then, after which he just drops the ball into the swing.

Set up :The bowler should have the weight of the body on the balls of both feet
and not the heels. The weight of the bowler should be = on both feet.A 50/50
weight distribution creates more balance as the bowler starts the steps.
Having your feet next to each other in the stance makes it harder to maintain
go balance.Putting a little space or separation between the,in the stance
is not bad.The ball side foot should be just slightly back from the non-ball
side foot.
The ball should be set in place between the chin and shoulder. If the ball is
placed outside the shoulder or in line with the bowling shoulder,it will
result in too much weight on one side of the body and creates a balance problem.
The arm will follow where the elbow points. If your elbow is pointed into the
bowler's side or behind the bowler, the ball swing will go that direction.
The ball height : The bowlers preference, arm length and balance must be
considered when trying to determine ball height in the bowler's start. The
bowler should at least start with the ball at elbow height or just a little higher
to create a good starting position, this allows the ball to be set into the swing
and helps promote a fluid motion.
In today's modern game; Most bowlers will take longer steps until the power step.
The power step is usually a little bit shorter. If the bowler takes five steps
in their approach, their steps will most of the time be short, long, longer, short power
step, and then a long power step into the finish
