I was watching these ladies bowl tonight on YouTube, maybe from the 1950s or early 1960s, and I noticed something with each bowler with their technique that I just wasn't expecting from that era. Attached are some stills.

Marion got the ball started super early and then had fast feet to catch up with her swing. She had a 5-step approach, and you can see the ball is already beside her right foot on the first step.

With Judy's swing, she has her left arm forward with an open hand at the top of her backswing.

So when did the modern game start again?

Was Judy's form a version of a figure 8 full roller? I have seen people throw this style and their hand is open at a point in their backswing.

Can't watch YouTube right now.

It doesn't look like it to me, but it is tricky to see her release and ball roll clearly in the old footage. I'd say she is bowling a semi-roller. Jim may have some more insight into this.

Judy Audsley later as Judy Soutar (semi-roller).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdmgCtRZdaU

Also in her instructional book for women she advocates releasing the ball with the thumb held fixed at at 10 o'clock.

Looking carefully it appears the oil ring is outside the fingers and thumb in the video.

If by chance I see her this summer I will inquire as to her ball roll.
