PVC Targeting Tool

Post by rcorbitt »

Does anyone have the specifications/measurements to make one of these using PVC? I have an eight year-old who will benefit from one of these, and I can't seem to get the USBC Store to process my order for the book.

Thanks!

I made my own a while ago, one with a mask and one without... here's the measurements I have:

All PVC - 3/4" sch 40

BASE: 4 pieces cut 6" long, 2 3-way tees, and 4 rubber end caps (all found at Home Depot)

RISERS: 2 pieces cut 10 1/2" long, 2 90 degree elbows (if no mask) or use 3-way tees if making a mask

PIECE SPANNING LANE: 65 1/2". I bought a roll of velcro, cut and attached to this piece, and I use felt pieces cut about a board wide and 12 1/2" in length as targets. Use a coin, attach to bottom to weight the felt.

IF USING MASK: 2 pieces cut to 36" as the risers, one more piece cut to 65 1/2", and 2 more 90 degree elbows. Attach more velcro to the top piece and use a fabric of your choice to attach to it. When bowlers are using the mask, they will not be able to see the result at the pins, putting more emphasis on hitting the target!

I made these in literally 15 minutes with a simple tube cutter... no need to glue anything, easy to transport and assemble when needed.

I like the masked one downlane, set to a breakpoint target or possibly area (use 2 targets for ball to go through) and another up at the arrows if teaching lines. Additionally I like to use red yarn, taped down at a target pin, and brought all the way up to the foul line to visually show launch angle, laydown point, and line through target to the breakpoint or to teach 3 point targeting - very effective.

Last little tip I use often - piece of 1" bowler's tape, fold one end together and leave other end to tape to lane - bowler's can easily see this target throughout approach.

PM me if you need any pics... good luck and enjoy your practice sessions with your son!

Kevin, thanks for providing the specs.
This is wiki-worthy. If you post some pictures, I'll add your info to the wiki, or you can do so yourself.
This is information a lot of folks can benefit from and you've taken the time to spec it out so to speak.
May all beings everywhere be happy and free,
and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life
contribute in some way to that happiness
and to that freedom for all.

I plan on building a blanket tool this summer. The High School Bowling Club I coach can/will learn alot more if I can keep them from looking too far down lane.

I love your idea of the bowlers tape folded, and place on the lane. Great thought there!

I built this set this past summer. The set with the screen is dual purpose it can be used with or without the screen. With the screen we put it at the arrows and set the gate opening at the desired arrow we are looking to play without the down lane taking away from focus on mark. Without the screen you can set up 1 at arrows and one for breakpoint. It has been and excellent tool for myself ,kids and a few others at the bowl who wish to challenge themselves.

Sparks,

What is the purpose of the 'shim' under the left side legs? I am assuming you made the base wide enough that it does not sit in the gutter, and rest's on the rail, and ball cap instead. Correct?

Buggs41,

Yes it sits on the rail and the return cap... for the rail side I took a small piece of pvc and cut it in half to give it some hold on the rail cap. the drop downs for the "gate" are made from PVC furniture T's which I sanded out a lil bit more to allow them to swing I also added afterwards Hose Clamps on each side of each the drop downs to hold them in place, when hitting them to much they tend to drift so they remedied that.... I like that idea better than the rag strips I've seen on other set-ups like this.

Sparks,

I love the thought you put into designing this set. I will follow your design.

One thought tho, instead of hose clamps for keeping the 'drop downs' in place, would a rubber 'O' ring and washer on each side of them be able to serve this function? No tools would be required during changes.

If you ever want help in designing a practice lane, Give me a holler.

Buggs41,

never thought of an o-ring before, gonna have to give it a try and see how it does. I'd think it could work out well it just has to offer a lil resistance to the slide from wanting to walk....gonna have to stop at Home Depot and get some and give it a whirl....

Thanx for the suggestion...

That Practice Lane looks Awesome....I just might have to tackle that I'll have to make some room in the basement....

My guess is you want to see "his" particular model.
Just for fun, I looked on YouTube for similar targeting items.
Plenty there for target shooting, including moving targets.
The aforementioned can be adapted, enhanced, etc.

Off the top of my head. (Probably already done by others, and better too)
If I were making one, I would have two moveable dangling devices.
Set them up like a goal post, roll the ball between them, much like Joe Ciccone's mini comes.
Set the width from ball diameter plus a bit or exactly ...
Better yet, add a structure to keep the pins from view.
Even better, add technology to remotely move the targets adapting available technology from other items.

Susie Minshew has a link to download plans.

BE CAREFUL REGARDING DOWNLOADING ANYTHING FROM THE WEB !!!!

Cheerio!
