mark the track on your ball, measure across the top of your ball track to track and use this chart to get your axis tilt, a pro-sect is best for this but you could use a flexible tape in a pinch.

RedRiverCoach -- Your mention of the ProSect made me think of something you may not know. When you lay out a line perpendicular to another line or measure an angle, there is s specific side of the spine you should use. Check it closely, one side is set at 0*, the other side is at about 3*. If you use the wrong side your angle or line will be off by about 3*, if you use the center of the spine it will be off by about 1 1/2*. Doesn't sound like much, but in some cases where you're doing multiple angles or perpendicular lines the errors can be additive. I used a Sharpie to mark the correct side of the spine to make it easy to tell which side to use. -- JohnP--

WOW. how did you ever realize that? Thanks for sharing. I alway have a fight trying to keep my lines under the spin(where you can't see them) when all along the accurate place was to the side(where I could see it easily). thanks

WOW. how did you ever realize that?
Jeff Ussery, now the Hammer brand manager, taught us that at the Ebonite Lane Play and Ball Layouts seminar I took a couple of years ago. Something else I did with my ProSect (came up with this on my own) - on the other side of the spine I used a Sharpie to measure the distance from the front so that when using the old X" x X" layouts I could easily visualize where the centerline will fall. And I marked the back ring in inches from the measuring side of the spine to help visualize the height above the midline the finger holes will end up. None of this applies to dual angle layouts, though. -- JohnP

The initial axis tilt measurement is necessary before I put my foot in my mouth, so to speak!

Use a grease pencil to mark the first track on your ball. Measure across the ball from one side of the track to the other. There is a chart on the wiki that will translate your measurement in inches to your axis tilt in degrees.

Does your pro shop guys know how to do this for you?

The person that made the video has an Armadillo sitting on the table. You can get the track diameter (or axis tilt, if you mark the track rings on the 'dillo) directly from the 'dillo when you measure the bowler's PAP. -- JohnP
