Hi all,
I got a hold off an old 2010 14# Seismic Desperado Urethane pearl assymetric ball. It is unique to me for it has a strong core relative to its cover. The specs are as follows:
Rg 2.574; Total Diff. 0.034; Intermediate Diff. 0.011;
Upon searching the web on other bowling forums, most says that it is used for short oil or sport patterns. Frankly, I really don't know why and when to use urethane. I am curious if I should drill it for long and strong for a mixed couple house league? The women throws mostly plastic and some of the men use really old urethane balls. But most of the men use some form of reactive resin. The oil pattern can sometimes get really strange with others throwing plastic and urethane. As you can see from my specs below that I have low ball speed and rev dominant. Right now, I have balls to cover long, medium and short oil conditions. I am curious if long and strong drilling is the way to go with this urethane ball. Thanks and I look forward to your suggestions.

75-4.5-50 Pin in the ring finger is Long and Strong for your specs.
Is this the right choice for messy lane conditions?
Probably not. The shiny pearl will definitely let you know when you hit carrydown.
I think it would be a better choice for when the lanes are fried and you are fighting too much friction.

Re: Suggest layout for an unique urethane ball
Thanks Eric. I was afraid that might be the case for my couples league. There are 3 bowlers that average 200+ in this league. They told me that conditions change from week to week. Sometimes, there was decent back end and other times the ball will not hook much forcing us to go straight at the pocket. I wonder if the center is not taking good care of these lanes since we are a "fun" league.
It appeared to me that I will not be using this ball much because they do oil the lanes before the start of our league. On the other hand, I might try to target the 7th board because there was a lot of friction anything outside of the 10th board.
How would you tackle these "messy" lane conditions? Play different balls based on changes in lane condition?

Surface...
When trying to get the ball to roll through carrydown it needs teeth to bite through and not loose grip with the lane.
You could put a dull surface on the Desperado.
Pearl balls don't need to always be shiny. But they look so pretty when they shine.
I've had several pearl balls that played very well with dull to matte surface preps.
With that said I would drill it 40-5.5-60 adjust to Pin in the Middle finger. Dull to Matte surface.
Playing on fresh oil I would cut the shine with a green or gray scotchbrite.
Then Pick a Skip a grit method starting with 2000. Adjust from there.
With the weak mass bias, .011, the PSA will be pulled about half way back to the thumb.
This will result in a post drilled layout of about 60-5.5-60
I would characterize this layout describing it as Benchmark Ratio, Control totals, with a strong pin to promote forward roll.

Re: Suggest layout for an unique urethane ball
Eric, thanks. Since this ball is basically designed for control on short or flat oil patterns, I think that I will leave it for when those conditions arise. I forgot to mentioned that this is a used ball drilled 70x5.25x30 with balance hole already. The span is a touch long for me but I can play with it to see how it rolls. I still might be able to roll it to the dry targeting the 7th board and see how far it comes back to the pocket. Do you agree?EricHartwell wrote: ↑January 26th, 2022, 6:55 pm I think it would be a better choice for when the lanes are fried and you are fighting too much friction.

Re: Suggest layout for an unique urethane ball
Sorry, one more question Eric. My #14 asymmetric MoRich Frenzy is drilled 60x5.5x70 just happens to have mass bias of 0.011 and total of 0.045. Perhaps this is the ball that I should dull the surface and see how it performs on carry down. What do you think?EricHartwell wrote: ↑January 28th, 2022, 7:47 pm With that said I would drill it 40-5.5-60 adjust to Pin in the Middle finger. Dull to Matte surface.

Re: Suggest layout for an unique urethane ball
The Frenzy has a Drilling angle upwards of 70* post drilled.
It would be worth a try.
Then Maybe go for a Benchmark drilling for the Desperado leaving it shiny: 45-4.5-50 pin in the ring finger.
This is adjusted to accommodate the PSA movement post drilling.
