Improvements but is it right...

Post by dojo7320 »

Thanks for the advice in advance... In the past year I have changed PSO and see a difference but am not sure if the layout is more on PSOs preference of what they like verse what would be good for my roll. My normal layout is a 70x4x45 because I have been told I need to “slow down” the ball to get it to read the lane properly on THS. Deal with a lot of over under and have taken a Pink Widow and place a short pin layout at 90x2.25x45 to play more up the second arrow.

Last season with old PSO equipment was averaging 150. This year is a marked improvement with some changes in span and pitches when measured properly. Now season average is 173 with recent weeks moving towards a 200 average and one of three games at 230 or better. Any help in layouts to move game to a consistent level with an eye to competing in local and relational tournaments is greatly appreciated.

Standard starting points: 25 to 30 at the feet / 20 with short pin
Aim Point down lane of 10 at about 35 feet
Break point: 6

What hand you bowl with: Right Hand
Based on Bowler ID
Speed: 17 MPH
Rev Rate: 417
Initial Axis Rotation: 73.5
Initial Axis Tilt: 2.7
PAP: 5 3/16 x 1/4 down
What surface you want the ball for: synthetic
What lane condition you are bowling on most of the time: Bowl three leagues with Stone Easy and Main Streets but want to prep for Nationals and similar tourneys
Do you think you are speed or revolutions dominate: Rev Dominate by Bowler ID standards

You need dull surfaces to burn off your high rotation so you don't need to "slow down" because the ball is too shiny.
Pin to PAP distances to retain tilt.
Long pin to PAP on Symmetricals and
Shorter pin to PAP on Asymmetricals.

Sweetspot 1.5:1 Ratio 110* totals

Asymmetrical Layouts
Totally Strong ......... 60-4.5-30
Midlane ................ 45-4-45
Benchmark ............ 65-3-45
Long and Strong ...... 85-2.75-45
Control ................. 65-3-65
low flare ............... 85-2-45

Symmetrical Layouts
Benchmark ............ xx-4.5-40
Control ................. xx-4.5-60 adjust to pin in the Ring finger
low flare ............... xx-5.25-40

Right Handed
PAP 4.75" up 1/2"
45* rotation
12* tilt
330 rev rate
16 mph off hand

Thank you for the response. It is definitely something different from what I was thinking. As I learn more about layout this will be definitely something to utilize the coverstocks and shape the lane verses manipulate the ball. thanks again Eric.

Eric surely knows about the science and art of matching up a bowler with equipment and optimum grip.
Opinion / 2 cents
My guess is that your improvement is mostly due to you improving your physical game. A PSO's number one priority is giving you the best fit possible, then doing his best to fill the needs of the bowler as the bowler evolves and develops.
