Thumbless bowler, general layout advice

Post by stevespo »

Mo posted a new video a while back, which builds on what he has published previously.

My quick takeaways are -

Adjust pitches to avoid rolling over fingers
Pin should be above the ring finger to PAP line
• higher pin is sharper breakpoint
• lower is smoother, don't go below line
Pin to PAP distances
• avoid 2.5-4"
• better 1-2.5" or 4-5.75" for smoother motion
• shorter less flare, smooth breakpoint
• longer is more end over end
PSA to PAP distance should be 5-6.5"
• longer for smoother breakpoint
• shorter is sharper

So, my questions -

Should we still be drilling the fingers 3.5" deep?

These layouts look roughly equivalent to large sum, med/large DA and med/large VA, with either a short pin to PAP, or a long pin to PAP. Low flare desirable, avoid the 2.5 to 4" range.

I'm going to drill a strong asym (Hammer Pink Widow) for a thumbless teammate.

IMO, not a great match for his speed/rev rate, but he wants to try this specific ball. No doubt we'll have to add a lot of surface. We're thinking the long pin/PAP and long PSA/PAP to help smooth it out. Pin near ring and then see what we can do with the PSA given the CG position (TBD).

Any other advice people would like to add? Much appreciated!

With a Strong Asym like the Widow I would not worry about drilling the fingers deep. Let the core be undisturbed by the hole drilling.
Drilling them deeper is for Symmetrical ball to set the PSA. Asyms are already set

Yes, that makes perfect sense! Good catch.
