Should I drill another low flare layout?

Which layout is right for me?

Should I drill another low flare layout?

Post by jsluk »

Hi all,

During December 2017, I got a performance fit with Mo. Drilled up a 14# Radical Cyclops Pearl 115x1.75x45. This was their entry level ball but has a total diff. 0.048. I have been working on my technique to reduce axis rotation. Still with this ball, it flips quite a bit on the back end. So I usually have to swing this ball inside of 3rd arrow and continue moving left to adjust.

This year I joined a couple more leagues (THS) where the conditions feel almost like 2nd shift by the time we get close to the end of the second game. The Radical is too much ball so I just got a 14# Brunswick Rhino. The total diff. is 0.030 and the core is light bulb shaped. I want this ball to give me the option to go straighter down and in shot. With this weaker core design, should I drill it identical to the Radical 115x1.75x45? Thanks.

The Cyclops has a very unique core shape. I would not use a recommendation for it on another ball that does not have a similar core shape.

You are looking for a solution to allow you to play in the dirt for a down and in shot. You already know the Cyclops doesn't work. You are hoping the low differential of the Rhino is going to be enough to offset the coverstrength. Cover is at least 60% of the ball motion, even more with the lower differential balls.

The issue is your high rotation and wanting to play the lanes a certain way.
Layouts do not work miracles. If you want to play the lanes this way change the way you roll the ball.

A good layout for you and this ball would be xx-4.5-35
No guarantees for the down and in shot.

Thanks Eric,

I agree with your assessment. Will punch it up and report back. Best regards.

Eric, quick question. The 4.5 pin to pap is to address the dirt conditions, right? Let say that the situation is not that bad, and I want the ball to start the roll sooner. Can I go with something like xx by 2.0 x 35? Thanks.

Sure you could go with xx-2-35 but I think you will be disappointed.

If you want it to roll sooner use a 4" pin to PAP, the 2" pin to PAP will have a short hook zone but a long skid zone. The shorter pin to PAP on Symmetricals will transition from hook to roll sooner than a longer pin to PAP.

I look at every layout recommendation as if I am the one with those release specs. I found that carry suffers with short pin to PAP Symmetricals and high rotation. They burn off tilt too fast so the roll phase happens with zero tilt and zero rotation deflecting and leaving lots of flat 10 pins. If it hits the pocket with some degree of rotation and no tilt you get ringing 10 pins. There seemed to be no in between.

Ultimately it is your choice on how to drill the Rhino.
