Benchmark Layout
I recently went down to 13 lb weight balls and I had my new PSO measure my fit and get my specs. I am a Lefty who is 76 years young and doesn't bowl leagues presently but bowls weekends as a member of the Amateurs Bowlers Tour. The shots are all sport shots no THS. My new specs since my old ones were with 14 lbs 4 years ago are: PAP 4 11/16 by 1 1/8 up, TILT 24 deg, ROTATION 75 deg, Ball SPEED off hand 13mph, REVRATE =175. I purchased from Visionary a Raven Invasion symmetrical pearl OOB 1500 and The Crow a Urethane OOB 500 abralon. Pins on both balls were 2-3. The Raven Invasion came out at 70x5 1/8 x 75 and The Crow 130 x 2 1/2 x 75. I'm looking for comments on the layouts and what would be a good benchmark layout. One additional piece of information is that 13 lb balls from Visionary are special order and although I requested 3-4 inch pins I was told that they only get 2-3 inch pins on their 13 lb balls which is what I got. Thanks in advance for any help.

No matter what you are trying to do remember simplicity gives better results than over complicating things.

Re: Benchmark Layout
I have you benchmarked at 85* total 1:1.5 Ratio
Asymmetrical Benchmark........... 35-4.5-50
Symmetrical Benchmark ........... 40-3-45 Balance hole 2" below midline on the VAL
Raven Invasion ......... 70x5 1/8 x 75 ... Pin down Symmetrical low flare. I would suggest sanding this ball very dull. I think you are going to have a hard time getting this one to roll except on the Driest of conditions.
The Crow....... 130 x 2 1/2 x 75 ... Urethane Drilling angle to thumb 100 for totals of 175* and reduced flare. The 2 1/2" pin to PAP is going to help it roll forward IF there is enough friction. Again I would be looking at sanding it dull.

Thanks for your input I have not had a chance to bowl with those balls yet, I'll try them and if as you suspect it doesn't work well I'll definitely sand them dull.

Re: Benchmark Layout
You may be able to get them to the pocket, pay attention to how they travel through the pins. If you find them bouncing off the pocket as I call it, deflecting and leaving corner pins or worse, you will know it is not getting into a roll. Rolling lighter equipment makes it that much more important to achieve roll for good carry.
