Went to my ball driller and he ran the VLS and suggested I go with a Storm Crux since the Master is not available to him yet. I'm in no hurry.
VLS went as follows: 2 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 1 1/2
Mo's recommendation: 35x4x45

Some definite variations!

Also I've read that in certain instances that the depth of the finger and thumb holes play a part in the dynamics of the ball. Will the ball driller know how deep?

Thanks,

Clueless

Ask your driller to explain the difference between his recommendation and Mo's

His ..................... (65-2.5-38.5) 2 1/2 x 5 3/4 x 1 1/2
.............................. 1.6:1 Ratio 103* total w/tilt and rotation storing pin position
good luck getting this one to roll with any kind of oil on the lane. Long skid zone and long slow reaction. Try 500 grit to help with the reactiion on this one.

Mo's ...................... (35-4-45) 4 x 3.67 x 2.59
................................1:1.2 Ratio 80* total
Short skid zone, Early strong reaction

Some variations???? the recommendations are not even close.

As long as you are not in a hurry I would wait for the Master to become available and use Mo's suggestion.
If you are feeling generous drill up the Crux as recommended by your driller and still wait for the Master to put Mo's suggestion on it.
Either way it will be worth the wait to get what you really want.

I don't think there will be an exact answer of the distance. It depends on how much core will be removed and this further depends on the size and shape of the core, and where the holes are drilled.

My Storm Hyroad Solid has a 2" deep balance hole where the core is not touched.

depth of the finger and thumb holes

drill the holes deep enough to accommodate the hand then adjust from there

If the ball needs dynamic adjustment use the gradient line method

Keeping the statics within USBC specs

I was reading the mail on this post, and the VLS references caught my eye. Only one out of four of the pro-shops in my area embrace the VLS. And, I've been experimenting with it for some time.
I plugged in Clueless' numbers as follows along with the 15# Crux that would give me the same result as the pro-shop:

Ball Speed = Medium (17 mph)
Rev Rate = Medium (300 rpm)
Axis-Tilt = Average
Axis Rotation = Off-the-Side (High Axis Rotation)
Pattern Length = Short (34-feet)
Pattern Volume = Medium
Reaction Strength = Strong
High/Low RG Layout = Low RG (rev fast and arc)
Transition Length = Medium (across migration)
Reaction Length = Early (mid-lane read before the end of the pattern)

I think the pro-shop's decision to go with a Low RG layout and a high axis rotation generated the biggest discrepancy between the VLS and Mo's recommendation as follows:

With the Low RG setting and “Off-the-Side” Axis Rotation, VLS recommended 2-1/2 x 5-3/4 x 1-1/2 or 65 x 2-1/2 x 40.

For the High RG Layout setting, VLS would recommend 4-1/8 x 3-7/8 x 3-1/2 or 40 x 4-1/8 x 65.
And, if you change Axis Rotation to “up the back”, VLS gives 40 x 4-1/8 x 40.

At least, that's the numbers I got … your mileage may vary.
