Balls and sport layouts for lefty

Post by TonyPR »

Hello guys, hope you’re all doing well. Question for Eric Hartwell and MegaMav.

Need advive on balls and layouts for a lefty 16 yr old sport and Jr Gold bowler. Stats are:

-14 lbs
-17-18.5 OTH
-220ish rpms (speed dominates revs)
-Tilt is around 18* eyeballing (need to measure)
-Track is medium
-up the back to 45* AR release

Since we’re on the left side we will most likely be playing up 5, up 10 or pointing it. It’s a girl so we most probably not see much transition on that side of the lane, don’t think she’ll ever get deeper than 15 at the arrows.

Undrilled Balls we have:

-Maximum Results
-Results Solid
-Results (the og yellow and orange one)
These in my opinion are a good sequence of asymms for playing straight and getting them to read early and burn tilt depending on the pattern, Maximum being the strongest, Solid in the middle and the OG goes the longest.

Besides the big balls we have an undrilled GB2 and a red Counter Attack that can double up as a spare ball, she can go 19 OTH at spares.

Mega, you’re the Radical expert and Eric you’re the layout guy. We chose those big asymms because of the high Int diffs and because Mo was a cool guy who designed awesome balls.

Nice to see your daughter is still competing in the highest levels.

Please do measure that Tilt. It is paramount for the Stronger cores.
I would also like to know her PAP measurement before giving specific ball ideas, especially the Symmetricals.
Is she still rolling no thumb?

With the info given up to this point here is what I got...

-14 lbs
-17-18.5 OTH
-220ish rpms (speed dominates revs)
-Tilt is around 18* eyeballing (need to measure)
-Track is medium
-up the back to 45* AR release

1:1 Ratio, 80* totals
Benchmark 40-4-40

Asymmetrical Layouts

Totally Strong .............. 35-5-25
Midlane ..................... 20-4.5-40
Benchmark ................. 40-4-40
Long and Strong ........... 60-4-40
Control ...................... 40-3.5-60
low flare .................... 60-2.25-40

Symmetrical Layouts
Benchmark ................ xx-4-35
Control ..................... xx-4-55
low flare ................... xx-5-35
Eric Hartwell

Right Handed
PAP 4.75" up 1/2"
45* rotation
12* tilt
330 rev rate
16 mph off hand

She just changed to thumb in one hander, about three weeks ago, never could get her speed to match up the two handed rpms. She is now the opposite, good speed with lower revs but her body seems to like the one handed style better plus she’s a lefty girl and her new game matches up really well with the left side. It was not easy for her, 4 yrs two hander, took a lot of humility to accept that she was going to get further in her bowling going one handed. Has progressed more in these last two weeks than in the last year.

Balls she is rolling now are plug and redrill balls she used two handed, mostly weak core/covers, took Del 6 attempts to get her fit right, her hand is extremely flexible and skin is wet and sticky but we finally got it right, ended up with 7/8 thumb forward LOL.

With the speed we have now we can finally use strong balls and have them work for her.

Does my ball selection sound correct? Would you add anything? Remember she plays the left side and only bowls sport shots, WTBA patterns in league, never house unless she’s kicking her boyfriend’s butt open bowling.

Will get that tilt and PAP this week

Sorry for the late reply, went through a couple of grip changes and drilled her a few balls for today’s Jr Gold Qualifier, needless to say she won the tournament so spot secured. Was quite an achievement as she only has been bowling one handed for one and a half months after for years of two handed bowling plus balls were made Wednesday and they were 14 lbs, one pound more than what she was rolling. Quite a few changes.

So here are her new specs
17.5 OTH @ 220 rpms
Tilt 10* PAP 4.5 x 1/4 up
Axis rotation about 45*

Balls used were:

Results Solid OOB finish 40 x 4.5 x 30 for the first one and a half games.

Results OOB finish 50 x 5 x 30 for the rest of the four game block.

Plastic for spares

Brunswick Pro Anvil

Pattern: 2018 D&S USBC Open Championships Final 42’

Training for Jr Gold Begins
My question now changes and is for MegaMav:

What Radical Balls would you recommend if she didn’t have any? Thinking Maximum Results and Trail Blazer are a must.

BTW this is the first time she rolls asymms and she loves them.

Thank you Eric, so the 50 x 5 x 30 on her Results OG would be like a longer Totally Strong? She really loves that ball. Brings it out and comes right back with a vengeance.

Yeah, you could call it that. Or you could call it an extra strong Benchmark.

It is definitely in her Range on the stronger side. One of many adjustments that can be made to my Basic Arsenal list.

Thank you Eric. So if she didn’t have any balls, and I have a lot of undrilled balls I could drill her but really looking forward to your answer, please suggest five Radical balls for Jr Gold for her lefty specs. Thinking 4 Asymms and a Symm. On the Radical Bowling Fans Facebook page, Al Leiendecker, father of two very competitive girls at that event suggested a short pin Trail Blazer.

What 5 balls would you recommend Eric?

What color does she like?

I find that liking the look of what I am rolling gives me another level of confidence.
I also shop by color, my wife actually started me in that direction.
I wanted to buy her a new ball and she told me it had to be green, her favorite color.
The only green decent ball out on the market at the time was the Brunswick Combat Zone.
So that was the ball. As it turned out it was also the most expensive ball offered that year.
It was the first time I ever spent more than $200 for a bowling ball.
My new arsenal is being put together and every new addition is going to have the color Blue in it, my favorite color.
Iv'e said it before here in BowlingChat, Ball Color can be the Most important ball spec.
Shelf appeal sells balls.

As far as a 5 ball arsenal I would go with a set up like this
Asym Favorite Strong ....... 50 x 5 x 30
Asym Benchmark ............ 55-4-35
Sym Benchmark ............. xx-4-30
Asym Control ................ 55-4-55
Asym low flare .............. 75-2.5-35

She’s like me, doesn’t care about color, more about making pins jump all over the place and putting some Xs on the scoreboard. The Trailblazer looks cool to me though, I like green and also black so if it was me definitely Max Results and Trailblazer. What Radical balls for her for those layouts my friend?

maximum results ..................................... Favorite Strong ............. 50-5-30
Results + ............................................... Asym Benchmark ........... 55-4-35
Intel Pearl Special edition........................... Sym Benchmark ............. xx-4-30
Informer ............................................... Asym Control ................ 55-4-55
Trail Blazer ............................................ Asym low flare ............. 75-2.25-35

I adjusted the low flare Pin to PAP a little because of the higher differential of the Trail Blazer
