Pin to pap distances between asyms and syms and angle ratio

Post by gunso »

Has Mo gotten away from his teachings that have been adhered here at bowlingchat for some time that longer pin to paps on asyms cause the ball to roll forward sooner and that the lower the tilt, the higher the angle ratio should be?

When looking at recent material published from Radical he no longer suggests different type of drilling for high and low tilt players. This was maybe because they were too complicated and what not but Storms recent articles got me thinking if those teachings only apply when the PSA is in a strong position and that the pin to pap distance for asyms works more sym like if the PSA of the ball is in a weak position (say 65-70 and higher).

Another recently published material has got me thinking about his angle ratio teachings. For low tilt players (high track) he tought higher angle ratios, 2:1 - 3:1 but in his power point presentation he suggests symmetricals for higher track players because they have a longer hook zone and therefore effectively a lower angle ratio. Conversely he suggests assymetricals for lower track players since they have a shorter hook zone and not because of the ability to lower the drilling angle.

There has been small changes to the low tilt ratios...overall it is still based on higher ratios, but it isn't a blanket option for all low tilt bowlers. The axis of rotation changes what ratios are recommended for a low tilt bowler. It also depends a bit on how low of tilt you are talking about...
http://wiki.bowlingchat.net/wiki/index. ... atio_GuideGo here and scroll down to the ratio chart...read the note right underneath the chart and look at the alternate chart it links to.

What ratios are recommended for low tilt bowlers doesn't change whether a sym is preferred over an asym for a low tilt bowler. A drilled symmetrical ball actually can end up with a higher angle ratio then am asym drilled the same way depending on the layout because a drilled syms psa always ends up in or near the thumb hole unless a large weight hole is used to pull it away from the thumb. They have a longer hook phase because of their weaker psa, i.e. their intermediate differential is lower then an asym. The higher the intermediate differential is the quicker the balls spin time is, therefore having a shorter hook phase the higher it is. Syms are simply recommended to help a low tilt bowler to get the end of the hook phase closer to the pins to lessen the chance of the ball rolling out or just loosing too much energy before hitting the pins.

As for high tilt bowlers...just because he doesn't mention the ability to keep the drill angle low does not mean that isn't part of the reason to recommend an asym for high tilt bowlers. Whether you can keep the drill angle low or not doesn't change the fact that the asym will still have a shorter hook zone so it will help get the ball into a roll before hitting the pins. You can get a sym to have a low final drill angle...but you are limited in options in doing so and need to choose the right pin-cg length to match your layout to allow you to have enough positive side weight to allow you to have a very large weight hole down the VAL to pull the psa over as far as you can. On an asym ball you can have that low drill angle but still have the freedom to use any weight hole you'd like as long as the static weights allow it so there is more tuning options to choose from. At the end of the day thought...the asym will still have the shorter hook phase barring you are comparing layouts that are close to the same.

I'll give two personal examples of balls/layouts that work well...
1: With my stats, my benchmark ball is a storm rocketship at 70x4x35
2: a friend that is speed dominant, high tilt and medium/high rotation we just got setup with a Jackal Ghost at 30x4.25x56(goal was 25x5x50 but needed adjustment for pin position to keep warranty and for ball strength) and it does exactly what it needed to for him.
