Thumb abrasion

Post by deadpin6 »

My granddaughter is on the high school team freshman team. The ball I had drilled for her she is getting an abrasion on top of her thumb knuckle. Her coach told me to open up the back side of the thumb..
Is this due to the hole is to small or is there not enough forward pitch they have her at 0 ? She says and watching her it does not appear to have an issue clearing it...
Though she is not consistent with her release about every other ball she'll throw a back up ball. Her forward release is very high track. All opinions/ suggestions welcomed

Maybe you can send a photo of the thumb? Also information about his grip would be helpful. Spans, pitches etc.

First thing that came in to my mind is that if the hole is too big and she is knuckling the ball because of it. Maybe you should visit some other PSO to have a re-check for the fit?

BINGO! Bending the thumb at the knuckle to grip with the tip, even if the hole's not too big, is common with beginners until someone tells them not to do it. Tell her to keep her thumb straight in the hole and apply any needed pressure with the base of the thumb. -- JohnP

That's usually from bending the knuckle inside the hole. Making the hole larger will most likely make the problem worse. Blisters, abrasions are from rubbing against the inside of the ball. The top of the thumb is a dead giveaway that she has a little room in the thumb hole.

Try a piece of 3/4" white tape for her to give her some texture to grip and take up a little space. Our thumbs are changing from day to day depending on many factors so tape can be our best friend.

Her coach who is a silver instructor recommend a pso, little bit of a drive but seemed to be worth it and he pointed out a few things wrong..
1, span was long
2, thumb pitch at -0- with 1/8 away and should have been toward
3, finger bridge wide at 11/32 he mentioned that will do some screwy stuff at wrist and thumb for sort spans...
She says it feels a lot better but hasn't had the chance to bowl with it.. possibly this afternoon we might make it down.
