Re: Very Odd Lane Effect and why did it happen?
John: I would be the last to discourage an honest pursuit of knowledge. The problem with Nord is that he asks the same thing over, and over, and over again, as many have commented on in the past. At some point we must ask ourselves whether his motive is the pursuit of knowledge, or a simple need to ...

Re: Very Odd Lane Effect and why did it happen?
Nord, you are starting to become the older Krava. You are being given advice and information about bowling, stop deciding that your own ideas are correct and arguing with the users with more expertise. The problem is that we are all letting him do it. He posts his nonsense, and many respond. It's l...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
How can you possibly say that with a video posted just above your post showing otherwise? It's easy. Just look at where the two balls enter the hook phase. There is a least 5' of difference between the two. Look, I started this thread to try to help the members here to improve their bowling. Many, ...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
The element that makes discussions about hooking a bowling ball is the method by which the amount of hook is measured. Traditionally, amount of hook is measured by the number of boards covered, and that number is totally affected by how early or late the ball hooks. If you consider the amount of hoo...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
One bowling ball hooks more than another- Most true of the lot. Snow tires and smooth tires are not the same. You're absolutely right! Snow tires find traction quickly. Smooth tires take longer to find traction. "Strong" balls hook early. "Weak" balls get further down the lane. ...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
I guess I must be getting more mellow in my old age. Having had to use nothing but plastic for the past year, I've had lots of opportunities to see the effects of carry down on a house shot. Using plastic, I not only create the streaks, but my ball also reacts more to carry down than reactive resin ...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
Mongo: I've bowled league in over a dozen houses in four different states over the past 35 years. My comments were based on what I've heard recently from high average house bowlers. Whether something was true in 1980, 1988, or 1995 with a Purple X-Caliber in your hand, the point is that many modern ...

Re: Bowling in 1980?
In the days of wooden lanes, the differences between the lanes were a direct result of different hardnesses of the individual boards that result in different amounts of friction. Those differences were always the same. Today, lanes are made of thin plastic sheets, that are not flat like the old days...

So true! I tried to cull it down to the ones I hear most. To list them all would take a large volume.

Re: Bowling in 1980?
Krava: The core is the only part of the bowling ball where the manufacturer gives you, the bowler, hard information to allow you to make an informed decision when buying a ball. They show you the shape, the symmetry, and tell you the low RG (the higher this measurement is, the more resistance is enc...

Re: Using a 15 and a 16 pound ball in the same game?
One of the very few things upon which coaches and PSO's agree is that using balls of different weights is a really bad idea for the very reason you state: it can really mess with your timing.

Re: Bowling in 1980?
#1 - You can soften up and get a ball to hook, yes. #2 - Resin hooks more than plastic? The idea of "making" a ball hook is not softening up on speed, it is the fact that most league bowlers are still trying to turn the ball to make it hook rather than rolling it and letting it hook. Of c...

Bowling in 1980?
A few days ago I was watching a couple of seniors practicing. One of the bowlers is a current league bowler who averages about 220. The other is a former Tour Player from the 1970's. As I observed their ball reactions and listened to their conversation, it occurred to me that their bowling beliefs w...

Re: Ajusting.... Learn Something
While it's been some time since I last spoke to Kelly, I seem to remember her telling me that one of the things that she had to improve to compete on the Men's Tour was standing in front of the ball return. I'm afraid that the PWBA doesn't afford her enough opportunity to practice this. I agree that...

Ajusting.... Learn Something
I just got done watching the PWBA Players Championship. If you doubt that you have to adjust based on what other players on the lane are doing, watch this Tournament. Game 1: Jordan Richard played in, Lindsay Boomershine played out. Jordan won by a lot. Game 1: Kelly Kulick played left of Jordan Ric...

Re: Bowling on Urethane carry down.
Ok, i read your article and your right, the lanes can have a influence on your ball. My initial comment was the urethane carry down effected my ball hook, then i moved back left bowling to the pocket. So i stand by my comment of what i saw. I also bowl league with this bowler, and have the same iss...

Re: Bowling on Urethane carry down.
It's interesting that when you moved to a new pair of lanes, your ball wouldn't hook, and you ASSUMED that it was oil-related. You might want to take a look at an article that I wrote recently for BTM entitled, "Of Black Holes and Other Unseen Obstacles." I have a hunch that you were seein...

Re: bowling after the pro's.....
Unless the lanes are double stripped, there will always be a ghost of the previous pattern after the first oiling.
