Re: Equipment Spec's has ruled to suspend the 3 unit rule!
In other words, the USBC has totally dropped the ball in terms of maintaining the integrity of the equipment, so they throw up their hands and say, "Oh, well, it's out of control, so now we'll do more of nothing to preserve the game." How long are we going to keep paying sanction fees to a...

Re: Returning to bowling after COVID Shutdown
I really don't think it's a matter of agreeing to disagree. Just use logic. Will wearing masks, practicing social distancing, and washing and sanitizing your hands prevent the spread of the disease? Probably. Will ignoring all of these things help prevent the prevent the spread of the disease? No. E...

Re: Returning to bowling after COVID Shutdown
Forget about what the CDC and WHO says. Common sense says that wearing at mask, practicing social distancing, and washing and sanitizing your hands frequently (along with not touching your face), will slow the spread of the virus. I, personally, do not want to see the virus continue to spread becaus...

Re: Returning to bowling after COVID Shutdown
I went to the bowling center yesterday to pick up league money. I decided to bowl a couple of games since I have not touched a ball for the last three months. The center was renting single lanes, every other one for open play. I was very distressed to see that I was the only bowler in the place who ...

Re: Why does no one like the USBC?
For me, the problem with the USBC is that they have totally neglected their long-time mission of protecting the integrity of the game. At the point where the USBC decided to move to Texas and take their coffee breaks with the staff of the BPAA, all was lost. Equipment is out of control, and lane con...

Re: Need more help on playing the lane "extreme hooking backends"
Ron Mohr gave me some very good advice a few years ago: when the lanes are "wet/dry", you have to decide if you are going to play in the oil or in the friction. If you try to play the oil line, you'll lose 20 pins to the field each game. In practical terms, get the idea of "where I us...

Re: My thoughts on PBA telecasts I've watched lately
I too have really enjoyed the recent telecasts. One thing that I would love to see though, is a color commentator who understands anything about modern bowling. On the last telecast, RP referred to the right lane being "slicker" than the left lane. Really? Not one mention of topography and...

Re: Tried 2 handed bowling today
If you are young enough that your body is able to do it, take the time to learn it. A few years ago I was interviewing Pete Weber. I asked him what he thought of the two-handers. He replied, "I hate them!" When I asked him why, he answered, "Because they can do things that I can't.&qu...

Re: Looking for a little help with angles...
Just for more clarity, I've lost count of how many bowlers I've helped over the years by simply convincing them to stop trying to make the ball hook, and just let it hook. As usual, I'm not talking in scientific terms, just the terms that help bowlers to improve their bowling. I stand corrected.

Re: Looking for a little help with angles...
I have a hunch that Johnny Petraglia gave that advice in a time before balls had self-hooking cores. It's a whole lot more difficult to "flatten out" your release to get modern balls to go straight. Just watch most high average league bowlers who still try to follow this archaic advice and...

Re: Looking for a little help with angles...
In terms of angles for making splits, remember that the larger the angle between your line, the pin you are going to hit, and the pin that you are throwing the pin into, the easier the spare is to make. Consider the four-six split, where both the four and the six on on the same line in the rack, the...

Re: Tech Talk: What to do when oil doesn't set before league
When the lanes are oiled two minutes before league, you do the same thing that you do if the lanes were oiled 10 minutes before, or twenty minutes before, or two hours before, or the day before: you do what needs to be done to strike. There are no formulas or guarantees. Listen to the lanes, they'll...

Re: being in a slump
A majority of slumps are caused by bad timing. Bad timing affects your accuracy, your release, and your consistency. The easiest way to correct your timing is to focus on posting every shot you throw. Posting means holding your follow-through with your trailing leg behind you, until the ball has exi...

Re: Let's talk surface
Some of the best advice I ever got came from Ron Mohr. He said that when the lanes get over/under, you have to decide whether to play in the oil or play in the dry. When you try to play the oil line when the lanes are over/under, you will lose 20 pins to the field each game. It works!

Re: Problem focusing on target
Try looking further down the lane and use a particular spot on the reflection of the pins on the shiny lane surface, ie. the right side of the top of the six pin.
