Re: PAP Question
Go back to the lanes with an observer. Mark the PAP location on each ball and throw it with the observer watching carefully to be sure the tape is stationary when the ball hits the lanes. If it's not, adjust the tape position until it is. It's easy to miss the very first oil ring, especially if the ...

Re: Skip flip ball reaction
I wanted a skid/flip reaction until I got one. Every time I threw that ball like I wanted to, just as it was ready to roll into the pocket it jumped through the nose. Worthless for me. -- JohnP

Re: Switch to lefty progress
After a chat with my local PSO, I took his suggestion to drop down to 14 pounds since my left hand and arm will not be as strong in the beginning. He gave me a great deal on a used, single-drill Pitch Black. Thursday was my first day out with the ball. There were some bad shots and there were many ...

I found 3/4" dia x #10 thread @ the site linked below. A quick trip to a hardware store will show you what's readily available and perhaps you'll find a better alternative. -- JohnP https://www.fastenersuperstore.com/products/carriage-bolts-steel-zinc-full-thread?pid=6001" onclick="wi...

Re: Plug cutting jig
By the way, if you were to decide to try the three screws, use carriage bolts instead - they don't have any slots so there's no way to scratch the ball. -- JohnP

Re: Plug cutting jig
Any shield you use will have to be large enough in diameter to cover the entire plug + extra diameter to allow moving the cutter around. That diameter will be very close to the diameter of the shield I gave you the link for. If you go with the three screws I wouldn't recommend using anything on the ...

Re: Plug cutting jig
A lot of shops use a router with the shield you'll see at the link below. Adjust the height of the bit to the surface of the ball, possibly using a height about half the amount you want to remove first, then a finish cut. I'm not sure how (or if) a Dremel tool would work with one. -- JohnP http://in...

Re: Very low DA / lower sum layouts
Did you actually weigh the ball with the layout drawn on it? If not, draw the layout you're interested in on the surface, then check the weights on a dodo scale. They will be very close to what they'll be after the ball is drilled, except for top weight, and you have some control of that by the dept...

Re: Very low DA / lower sum layouts
I dug out an Absolute Inferno with a MB kicked left...way left. Higher TW, so not a ton of flexibility since I'm ditching weight holes now to get used to it. Remember, with the new balance regs you're allowed 3 oz of imbalance in all directions. High top weight isn't much of a problem as long as yo...

Re: No-thumb thumb hole
With the Detroit half-thumbers I've drilled for (just a couple) the thumb hole is used to grip. My thoughts on the huge thumb hole is not to use it to grip, just let it lay inside of the hole instead of outside. The track should be about the same as without the hole. Also, the small half-thumb would...

No-thumb thumb hole
There are no limits on hole diameter or depth for gripping holes. What would happen for a no-thumb bowler if a huge diameter "thumb hole" (say, 1 1/2" or even larger) was drilled, pitching it in the direction the thumb lays on the ball (reverse and left for a right-hander)? First, wou...

From the data on the TV broadcasts Belmo gets around 550 RPMs, so even it revs up when it rolls. The less revs a bowler has the more dramatic the increase will be. -- JohnPFinal RPM (calc) => 23.47'/sec = (23.47 x 60)/2.23 = 631.5 rpm

Darkhorse's calculations are confirmation of the verbal explanation in my earlier post, except that he didn't take axis tilt (reduced initial diameter of the track) into account in the original RPM calculation. -- JohnP

Re: RG of the PAP
I don't understand the relationship of the migrating axis crossing the pin to spin line to revs. What I at least think I understand is that as the ball loses axis tilt and lane friction slows it down the revs increase because the track is rolling on almost its full circumference. Calculate the revs ...

Re: Marathon tournaments?
My partner and I won a 16 game doubles handicap tournament that started at midnight of New Years day in the late 60's at Woodleaf Lanes in Salisbury, N. C. There was a break after 8 games to get a bite to eat and re-oil the lanes. Prize money was $100 each, and as far as I know that's the only year ...

The oven method is best as long as you have an oven that is specifically designed for bowling balls. A home oven's thermostat isn't accurate enough to assure you won't damage, even melt or burn a bowling ball. -- JohnP

Re: Thumb problems preventing clean release
Things to check - span (too long?), bevel (not enough?), pitch (not enough reverse or too much forward), hole size (too big?). A complete refit with a certified fitter would be good. See Mo's fitting tips in the wiki (radio button at the top right hand side of every page here). -- JohnP
