Re: Bowling Ball Resurfacing

Here’s the best info available that has been used by most bowlers.

It’s the way I’ve done balls for the last 20 years or so and as stated by Glenn.

Help with playing old oil pattern.

Don’t know if anyone can help me out but our centre is changing its oil pattern. We have old wood lanes and they took a 9 week battering when the machine was down and no oil was laid so you can guess what the surface has become like. 20 to 20 is almost back to the wood in the first 12 feet or so. We...

Re: Targeting

OK, no one else wants to have a go so I’ll try to explain mine. I’m a senior bowler who has struggled with getting more speed in my game so I’ve developed this system that seems to work for me. I target the breakpoint by either using a dark board or if possible the reflection of the pin deck light o...

Re: Seeking Single Ball Solution

On modern patterns I think someone who is speed challenged like I’m presuming you are,. (Me too by the way.) then I think a spare ball is a must. I love my Storm Mix and quite often use it for strike shots as it shapes off the outside quite nicely. From what I’ve seen of the purple solid, it does lo...

Second vote for the Hyped Solid. Very underrated ball.

I have used it both dull and polished and find it an exceptional ball at that price point.

Re: Offset Thumb

If you look at the image you posted and imagine seating two grips with lifts in them, in the finger holes on the first picture they would face towards the thumb parallel to the centre line. On the second drawing they would face again straight down parallel to the line. This would be the only differe...

Re: The Bowlers of Championship Bowling

Don Carter was, (I felt) the man the PBA tried to write from existence. The bowler I always wanted to meet. His record of “majors” was an ever decreasing number. If I remember it started at 12 or 14 and slowly decreased as “majors” were re-classified. At least Bowlers Journal got it right by voting ...

Re: Marks on Bowling Balls

You can usually tell if they oil the font foot or so as it looks matte finish, same as the approach if there’s no oil on the first few inches of lane. Another way is to have a wander up when you’re in practice and rub your finger about an inch or so onto the lane. If anyone says anything just say yo...

Re: Marks on Bowling Balls

I agree with TomaHawk. What it may be is marks from hitting the lane just short or just over the foul line as most centres in the UK do not oil the first foot or so of the lane. Don’t know if it is the same in the US but if it is it does cause burn marks even on synthetic lanes. I know I have had a ...

Re: Does lane oil change the surface of the ball between shots? Part 2 !

If JR lets the oil sit on the ball it will affect the track area of the ball. You proved this. The ball will alter or migrate towards a stable state due to so called lane shine. Ron Hickland says around 4800. While this is happening the dry track should always read a different grit than the wet oil ...

Re: Does lane oil change the surface of the ball between shots? Part 2 !

Good work, well worth showing in my option. I do enjoy seeing things like this. Shows in a way what JR was trying to say in that he found the ball seems to skid through the heads and mids as the game goes on and oil decreases but keeps the smoother reaction on the back of the lane. Don’t forget that...

Re: Wipe ball or not ? And when ?

I do see what JR is trying to achieve in that he feels he can get aggressive balls down the lane more consistently if he doesn’t wipe them as he feels by retaining oil on the ball it helps with any early hook he gets from a changing lane surface. This he feels allows him to keep the smoother reactio...

Re: Thumb taping

The best tape I’ve found and I’ve been using it for over 20 years is Hyperfix tape.

It’s a medical tape but has awesome adhesive ability. I’m yet to find anything better.

You can find it on amazon or eBay and it’s very reasonably priced.

Re: Arthritis

Don’t know if it’s the reason but Tommy Jones does a figure 8 with some of the kinesiology tape that he uses. That seems the only reason you’d tape the ring finger that way to reduce the pressure on it. Another thing to think about is going to a Sarge Easter grip with a dropped ring finger. That wou...

Re: New to forum - Question about new ball I bought

What I have done is go with a Storm Mix for spares as I roll my spare shot over the thumb and experienced cracking on 3 polyester balls. The Mix being urethane has had no issues. You can always find an old urethane from the 80’s on eBay and try that. If you have fairly normal pitches in your fingers...

Don’t know if this will help you but if you have an Apple device download Puffin Web Browser.

Then open the ovalator link in that.

Just worked for me. If I only needed it myself that’s how I’d use it.

Re: Ideas for a first urethane.

Well, first night with my Purple in my home centre. Lanes were extremely patchy both in the front and back. Typical pattern for a machine that is 28 years old, doesn’t strip (done by hand) and a motor that was a 2 speed but is now a one speed. Wood lanes that haven’t been refinished/resurface since ...
